✨ 30. CREATIVE RESOURCES -
Good energy. Doing the work. Sharing knowledge and best practices. The stronger your creative community is, the more free every artist can be to do their very best. As Dizzie Gillespie said, "You can't steal a gift. Bird [Charlie Parker] gave the world his music, and if you can hear it you can have it."
•••
ARTBANK
In 2019, we hosted ArtBank in our downtown Akron studio with a goal to "Unlock a culture of creativity." This free event included (1-3) a Salon-des-Indépendants-style art exhibition that anyone could submit anything into, (4-6) a free website workshop that created 10 websites from scratch for aspiring creative entrepreneurs, and (7-10) a healing energy session, artist's roundtable, silent disco dance party and gallery opening. Bringing artists together is so important, and in our experience, always results in a net-positive because of the creative resources that are shared.
✨ 9. A healthy thing to remember.
✨ 10. Shout out to ☀️❤️DO IT BADLEY❤️☀️ for the awesome Akron Love magnets!
✨ 1. Gotta give 💐 to Nichole Epps for always bringing that good energy we love!

Since founding ART x LOVE in 2017, we have paid more than 300 artists for a wide range of creative projects. We've shared templates for proposals, presentations, contracts, grants, marketing, research, legal documents, and press releases. We've referred thousands of people and businesses to local artists, creative organizations, community networks, leadership groups, grants, RFPs, RFQs, and Calls for Artists. And whenever an artist asks, we try to give them 30 minutes to answer their questions and steer them toward worthwhile resources. Supporting the health of a creative ecosystem is inherently fulfilling, and in our experience, tremendously rewarding. When a local artist wins, everyone does.

😶 27. FREE EXPRESSION -
It's taboo. This thing we do as artists. Making something out of nothing. Speaking our mind. Pushing boundaries. Stirring conversation. As Salman Rushdie said, "What is freedom of expression? Without freedom to offend, it ceases to exist."

EROTIC VULTURES
In the winter of 2010, Mac was invited to show a new body of work for a holiday and new year's exhibition at Grape and Grain, in New York City. The restaurant was (and still is) incredibly popular, but looking for something fresh and provocative to keep things busy through the winter. Mac created the "Erotic Vultures" as an exploration of s*xuality and social discourse. Each charcoal drawing was designed to be as graphic and s*xually provocative as possible with a rorschach-like figural elusiveness. The show proved to be a sensation, and became a highly sought destination among city's dating and tinder set. "At that time in my life, I was very curious about what society and we as individuals allow ourselves to recognize, consider, and discuss when it comes to our bodies and s*x," says Mac. "I felt like many of us had a secret life between our virtual and physical identity, and I wanted to bridge that space and help people put themselves out there." Each piece was framed like a dreamcatcher in white birch. The series also drew inspiration from the Pixies song, "Subbacultcha." Please contact us directly if you are interested in purchasing one of these pieces.

Caring. Taking the time to listen, to be present, and to tune into oneself is one of the healthiest things we can do. 📍 23. PLACEMAKING -
Destination worthy. Placemaking addresses social, economic, and environmental inequities to invigorate us with health, happiness, and a sense community. As Jeff Chang said, “Nothing has ever changed without a radical leap of imagination.”

RESERVOIR PARK
In 2017, Reservoir Park was in bad shape, averaging just 15-30 visitors on peak days. Art x Love’s placemaking projects sparked a remarkable transformation across the park, community, and City.
1. TEAMWORK: We explored every street in Goodyear Heights, interviewed hundreds of residents, and learned that 92% wanted to see Reservoir Park restored. We partnered with kids, community members, and volunteers to realize that vision.
2. BEFORE: The pool and recreation center were unattractive and frequent targets of vandalism. On peak days, the pool averaged 15-30 visitors.
3. AFTER: Art x Love power-washed and painted 40,000 sq. ft. of concrete, upgraded the benches, and restored the aquarium mural.
4. POOL PARTY: We threw a party at the end of the summer to celebrate the transformation of the pool. More than 500 people attended.
5. RECLAIMING AKRON: Hundreds of residents left their mark on the project.
6. CITY SUPPORT: Investment quickly followed. This year, the City committed $25 million to Akron parks and community centers, a new record.
7. THRIVING: Pool attendance more than doubled after this placemaking transformation. Reservoir Park now averages 100-300 visitors on peak summer days.
8. LOVE: We miss you too. When you take an equitable approach to research, design, and creative investment, everyone benefits.

🎓 22. ARTS EDUCATION -
Learning is fun. The intersectionality of art is a powerful tool for building knowledge. As a wise person said, "Life never stops teaching."
•••
Every year, we dedicate time to arts education because we believe that creative courage supports individual and community excellence. In 2019, we were privileged to work with Dara Harper and Carla L Jackson on several experiences with their students from Emmanuel Christian Academy. These included:

1-2. A tour of our downtown Akron studio, featuring an 8,000 sq. ft. exhibition dedicated to Akron's 24 neighborhoods from our Akron project. Each student received a set of silent disco headsets and had the option of listening to (A) a guided tour of the exhibit, (B) interviews with residents, or (C) a mixtape of local bands and music.

3-4. Mac was then invited to ECA to answer questions from the students about the arts, community building, and creative collaboration, with a specific focus on how each can address "blight” as part of Carla’s STARS program.

5-6. Students returned downtown for a tour of our "Beyond the Dream" murals at City Hall. Mac introduced the students to each artist's work and discussed how economic disparity, education disparity, and health disparity impact our community. The students then got to paint work on their own mural panels.

7-8. Carla arranged for the students to go to Cleveland for Jumpstart Cleveland's STARTUP SCALEUP Conference, where Mac was speaking as part of a panel of creative entrepreneurs. The students got to see and contribute to the large chalk murals Mac created for the conference under the Main Ave. bridge.

9-10. Later that summer, Dara invited Mac to lead an asphalt art project with the ECA students at 5 Points Garden, in Akron's Highland Square neighborhood. ECA secured permission to paint the sidewalk, and Mac donated his time and materials to help the kids realize their vision.

YELLOW SUBMARINE
In 2005, Mac returned to the United States from Scotland, where he had bartended his way through school to pay for his MFA while the United States invaded Iraq. As a frequent target of drunken foreign vitriol over the U.S.'s unjust invasion, Mac was surprised to find the military community he lived in to be largely silent despite the contentious politics of "the war on terror." The proud submarine-shaped sign that greeted passersby on Interstate-95 in Groton (CT) had started to fall into disrepair, and Mac thought painting it yellow as a non-violent protest against the war could be just the spark people needed to spur discussion. On October 19, 2006, Mac climbed the hillside and painted the sign. He waited to get caught, but no one came. He went back to his apartment, called his parents to let them know what he had done, and then took a nap. When he woke, there was a message from Homeland Security waiting for him. He met that afternoon with the state troopers and confessed. Fox News called him a "graphic art terrorist," and death threats were left in his mailbox. Many articles and letters were written to the paper, both in support of his actions and against for the next several months. And wherever you went, there was a good chance you'd hear people openly talking about the war, or playing "Yellow Submarine" on the jukebox. Shortly after, anti-war sentiment led to the election of Joe Courtney (D) over incumbent Rob Simmons (R) in Connecticut's 2nd District. Mac stayed in Connecticut for another four years, learned from the experience, and continued to create and serve the community. 16 years later, a lot has changed, but you can still hear the song playing on those jukeboxes.

🌾 20. RURAL ART –
Journey. Many of our favorite creative experiences happen when no one is looking. Being present is part of the beauty of that rural experience. As Meia Geddes said, "Being in the country is like being in a dream – one doesn't quite know who one is."
•••
"Rural" is defined differently around the world. Rural areas have less than 200 people in Denmark, less than 2,000 people in Argentina, less than 50,000 people in Japan, and less than 100,000 people in China. The "rural" designation has a major impact on how countries resource remote areas. This got us thinking about the remote art we find in our travels, and the way time and thoughts converge to bear witness.
1. Dew-dropped door in a field, Vermont.
2. The road to Mt. Suilven, Scotland.
3. Silk embroidery outside Kyoto, Japan.
4. The trail to Mt. Suilven, Scotland.
5. Store window at night, Singapore.
6. Carved dwelling sunken in river, Bali.
7. Pagoda sunrise, Bali.
8. Pinching the sky, Canada.
9. R U Happy? vandalism in Tokyo, Japan.
10. Broadway curtain, New York.
•••
Maybe "rural art" is about more than location. It's also those remote experiences and moments that take us away from the noise and density of everyday life. It's important and beautiful to find quiet, breathe, and simply be.

👣 19. SOCIAL IMPACT –
Legacy time. We get one life. Our choices have the power to honor those who came before us and impact all who come after. We work intentionally to put people and the environment at the forefront of everything we do because we know from experience that's the best way to make a meaningful impact and leave a legacy that endures. As Margaret J. Wheatley said, "There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about."
•••
In July 2017 we launched Akron with a $240k Knight Foundation grant and in-kind support from City of Akron, Ohio - Mayor's Office, Summit Metro Parks, Akron Public Schools, and Akron-Summit County Public Library. In 18 months we explored every street in the city, interviewed thousands of residents, and produced more than 100 murals and 50 placemaking transformations in collaboration with 168 paid artists and more than 10,000 creative participants. We had specific objectives and an amazing team that helped us meet and exceed them. But shortly after we started the work, we realized were part of something much bigger. The simple act of listening to people, of proactively seeking their input, of exploring their questions and providing them with answers had a healing effect – not just on them, but on us. As one team member said, "It's like we're humanizing Akron." One goal we aspired to but rarely said out loud, was to create a critical mass of positive creative energy that would forever change the way people feel, think, and dream about Akron. We learned a great deal from this experience, and are grateful to the many people, leaders, and new friends who recognized and found inspiration from the social impact of making art work. Our deepest gratitude to all who made it possible.

Rainbow Bridge

⚙️ 18. BUILDING BRIDGES - (Part 1)
Connection is everything. Bridges take us over, under, and across. They are an invitation to a different way of seeing, living, being, and doing. Sometimes that's all one needs. As Chief Seattle said, “We do not weave the web of life, we are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves."
🌈
RAINBOW BRIDGE
We worked with the Eller Club to transform a neglected playground into a rainbow chalkscape. Four years later, it still stands as a colorful invitation for community to reclaim public spaces, and provides kids with a positive and vibrant outlet for creative expression. The rainbow chalkscape is a bridge for kids and community. Many ask where it is for their wedding photos and video shoots. You can find it across the street from the Boys & Girls Club, facing 889 Jonathan Ave., in Akron, Ohio.

KALEIDOSCOPE GARDEN
We created this commission for Cleveland's 5th Street Arcades in 2015. Here is a deconstruction of the parts and process:
1. The mural today.
2. What it looked like before. The window panes had been painted over to hide the kitchen on the other side.
❤️ Our goal: to create a mural that engages passersby and encourages them to enter 5th Street Arcades.
3. Points of inspiration, in clockwise order from top left: Klimt, Hundertwasser, Horta, Parrish, Japanese flower shops.
4. Floral concept. The numbers indicate varieties of flowers from Monet's garden.
✨ The idea was of a flower shop consumed by flourishing blooms.
5. Scenes from Monet's garden and the paints to bring it to life.
6. Floral composition of the mural (wall 1 of 2).
7. Initial painting on holographic paper collage. This material adds kinetic energy to the composition, with colors that shift with changes in light and perspective.
8. Before and after the mural.
9-10. Some favorite details.
