🅰️+ MAINTENANCE // Our benches were created 5 years ago to bring functional seating and “destination worthy” sculpture to all regions of Akron. We’ll be retrieving each bench this fall to make some minor repairs, and would like to invite local families and companies to sponsor the repairs and be recognized on the sign displayed next to each A. Please contact us for more details and info about sponsorship tiers. The benches are located at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, International Soap Box Derby, and the Firestone Park Rec Center. We also have a fourth A available for display, and would be happy to entertain any locations you’d like to see it in North or West Akron.
•••
The Destination Akron benches were created by Comunale Sculptural and Jeremy Brandon Jenkins for our project, and represent 1 of 98 unique initiatives we produced across Akron’s 24 neighborhoods in 2017-2018 with support from the Knight Foundation.

to the magical realism of Scotland. Mac attended lectures at St. Andrews' Institute for Theology, Imagination, and the Arts (ITIA) from 2002-2005, and did these plein aire sketches while attended their annual conferences. ITIA offered an accelerated PhD program for interdisciplinary studies, and the conversations Mac had there still reverberate through the way we think about .

Home is where the heART is // We're excited to share that we've been selected as the artists in residence for this year-long initiative with Cuyahoga Falls City Schools, funded with support from the Ohio Arts Council and the GAR Foundation.
•••
"Home is where the heART is" will combine research, art, and design to create a permanent art piece for Cuyahoga Falls’ new combined middle and high school building. Students, staff, and faculty will learn best practices for interdisciplinary project management as we engage residents, community members, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, and high schoolers with interactive opportunities to share and develop their vision for what "home" means, and how it can best be represented now and through the future. Students will also learn about the work and creative methods of Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant), and international and local artists.
•••
We're thrilled to partner with the amazing team at Cuyahoga Falls High, Bolich Middle, and Roberts Middle Schools. Join us at Octoberfest in downtown Cuyahoga Falls on September 15th to meet our team, and stay tuned for more exciting updates!

AKRON III - We never gave up on completing and finding a home for this community mural from our project. AKRON III was created in 2018 at our at , and has since been painted by Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, students from Emmanuel Christian Academy, members of Leadership Akron, people touring our old studio, visiting artists, and participants from our Free Paint Fridays. Literally hundreds of community members of all ages, perspectives, and abilities made their mark to complete this mural. And now, 5 years later, AKRON III has found a home at IBH Addiction Recovery's new facility in Firestone Park (1601 S Main Street, Akron, OH). Akron III reflects the determination and spirit that will forever endear us to this community. Thank you !

COLOR FIELD // Our progress on the "Land of Opportunity" mural at Cleveland Public Library's Rice Branch reminds us of the color field style of abstract painting that emerged from New York City during the 1940's and 50's, and also conjures thoughts of the "Wall of Sound" music production style of the 1960's. We're putting finishing touches on the mural this week, and thought we'd immerse you in these fields of color and walls of sound to see what they inspire in you.

AKRON BRANCHES // In 2018, we engaged Kontur Wood Works in collaboration with the City of Akron's Arborist to produce four benches using trees felled from different parts of the city. Each of these benches was made from a branch of one of those trees, and installed with signage providing the historic human context for its life. These benches were installed for free at various locations across Akron for the last four years as part of our project. We are currently in the process of refurbishing them, and look forward to honoring their original purpose – to have a home and provide an area for rest and reflection in each geographic region of the city.
•••
We are currently seeking new locations to install our South and East benches. Where would you like to see them?

🥕PLENTY // The aforementioned 5 ft. x 7 ft. oil painting with carrots that Mac did in 2000, and the summer sketch that inspired it. "I wanted to reach out and really engage the audience in a participatory experience," says Mac. "People would see all kinds of things in the background and get closer and closer to the painting, and eventually find themselves in this strange situation standing under carrots hanging from a rope above a rabbit hole." Mac created several of these large scale paintings, but they all sold and this is the only one he still has a photograph of. Note to artists: take plenty of pictures, and always back things up at least 2x.

OFF THE WALL // As we transition to our new studio space, these keepsakes caught our eye lingering on the wall.
•••
1. The fake carrots that hung in front of Mac's "Land of Plenty" series. These large scale oil paintings were created using a thrilling dance-painting technique Mac developed in college. He then painted cartoon scenes over the abstract expressionist backdrop, and staged Elmer Fudd inspired traps in front of each one. Naturally, the carrots hung over the painted rabbit hole.
•••
2. A pool lock from Reservoir Park. Our community art and placemaking projects revitalized the pool and community center, so much so that kids started cutting the locks and breaking in at night. This was the third lock they cut in the summer of 2018 to swim at night. Given the historic lack of interest and awareness of the pool that preceded this project, the cut locks were considered "a good problem to have."
•••
3. There's a man named Dave who hangs out at Old 97, in Akron's Kenmore neighborhood, and does drawings of Happy Jesus. If you see him around, say “Hi,” and you might get a Happy Jesus of your own.
•••
4. We cherish our local creative landscape, from the independent artists to the full-time design professionals. Each are problem solvers in their own way, and we're grateful for these reminders of the amazing work, perspectives, and experiences they bring to the world.
•••
5. Our collection of signed artist cards continues to grow – we have 85 left and look forward to throwing a party for the featured artists in the (hopefully) not-so-distant future.
•••
Have a great weekend everyone!

DESTINATION AKRON // We produced four of these benches for our project in 2018. They were designed by Jeremy Brandon Jenkins and built in collaboration with Comunale Sculptural. You can find them at Soapbox Derby, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, Firestone Park (outside the community center) and Summit County Historical Society (awaiting installation). We created these to bring destination-worthy cultural assets to every corner of the city. These benches represent four of more than 150 public artwork we produced across Akron’s 24 neighborhoods from June 2017 to December 2018. Perhaps you’ve seen a few 😊

SOL

Oil on canvas with metallic gold
5 ft. x 3 ft.

In 2005, Mac woke from a dream and created this oil painting after having a vision of this scene. It depicts the cargo hold of a sunken Greek ship, filled with vessels in disarray. Emerging from one vessel, or perhaps exploring the ship itself, was a glowing golden orb, burning like the sun. "At the time, I remember thinking it represented some kind of spirit in transition," Mac says. "Those days, the expression 'a container for containers' would drift through my mind from time to time, and something about this scene encapsulated that for me."
•••
In 2006, Mac donated Sol to the Covenant Shelter of New London, a "temporary shelter in an environment that respects the dignity of the individuals and families who are affected by homelessness."

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
When we founded in 2015 it was after several years of research and discussion about our values and expertise, our services and points-of-difference, the impact we achieve, and the experience we provide. The name ART x LOVE was one of several finalists, and captured our imagination with its multiplicity of interpretation.
•••
ART-by-LOVE can refer to our family name, but also is an aspect of measurement (i.e. 2x4 = 2” by 4”). What dimensions are revealed when you multiply art-by-love?
•••
ART-times-LOVE can refer directly to that multiplicity, but also has a temporal aspect. Where does art-times-love take you?
•••
ART-ex-LOVE can refer to the letter “X,” but also phonetically sounds like the Latin prefix “ex” meaning “out of” or “out from,” and when applied to a person means “no longer.” To Mac, this latter pronunciation recalls people’s conversations about their relationship with Art as an “ex,” as in “I used to love painting, but then I had to get a real job.”
•••
We happily accept all pronunciations and interpretations. What does ART x LOVE = to you?

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE // Throwback to Mac's early graffiti era (2005-2010). After returning to the US from Scotland, Mac was surprised to find his home country more polarized and fearful than he remembered it. "It seemed like the 'War on Terror' had changed the basic fabric of our society," says Mac. "I was inspired by the disruptive work of Banksy and Shepard Fairey, and wondered how I could use that creative language to provoke thoughts and conversations about otherness, and inner & outer space."
•••
We're planning a massive sale of Mac's work before we move into our new studio, including several of the pieces pictured here. Drop an emoji in the comments if you're interested in checking out what's available. 👀

BLANK CANVAS // Mac's starting a portrait commission today for the lobby of a Cleveland law firm. It will be an oil painting, which is Mac's preferred medium "because of the way you can use layers to create a richness of color and character."
•••
Did you know: Mac started doing paid portrait commissions when he was 13 years old? He learned how to draw figures using tracing paper and baseball cards to create his own collages when he was 8. By the time he was 14, he was doing caricatures of every varsity player and coach at his high-school for their season yearbooks.
•••
Mac says, "I've always enjoyed painting portraits, not because I'm trying to capture who the person is – that changes. I try to capture the process of discovering who a person is – that's something we all work on for ourselves as much as others."

SWEET DREAMS // Mac has learned that if he wakes from a vivid dream with his eyes closed he can retain the memory of the dream with greater clarity. Ever since college, he's kept a sketch book next to his bed to draw and write in – but only with eyes closed. Over the years, it has become an important resource and fountain of inspiration for his art.
•••
This charcoal illustration of a night sky with doors to other worlds appeared in one of Mac's dreams 20 years ago. In 2021, he had the opportunity to recreate it for The Dexter in Ohio City. Check it out during the day and night to see the full range of holographic effects, preferrably with your eyes open ;)
•••
Bonus – try waking from a dream with your eyes closed and see if Mac's trick works for you. Let us know!
