A HUGE thank you to Ajo Fitness for sponsoring breakfast this morning and Annelise of Curley Coffee for coffee the past two mornings for the muralists.

In addition we’d like to thank Jacob of Ajo Fitness and Randall Wilson of Oasis Cafe for barbecuing all day today for an amazing dinner. We also want to thank Micah Perry of Ajo Resale for the buns for all the meat.

Lastly, we want to thank all of you in the community who came to the community potluck! What an amazing event, with food and friends.

Ps. The potluck is still on! Go grab some food and enjoy the music that is to come this evening.

Teamwork resulted in several community murals at our 2017 Ajo Street Art Happening:

1. Members of Bike Ajo paint their mural
2. Volunteers and passers by picked up paintbrushes to work on two, side-by-side, community murals.
3. Kat Anderson at work on aspects of the community mural she designed (for the public to help paint) for Ajo's Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Learn A Bit About the Ajo Street Art Happening

Join us as we forward a local conversation about environmental justice and visions for the future. Ajo has been economically depressed since the large open pit mine closed in the 80's following a strike for higher wages, but many are working hard to continue to create an Ajo legacy. We have a space and time for conversation, and invite you to join us.

The Ajo Street mural project started in 2015 when the Tucson Arts Brigade was invited by the International Sonoran Desert Alliance to lead artists from throughout southern Arizona in the creation of over 30 murals of all sizes in the center of Ajo, AZ. The following year Ajo youth and artists came to Tucson for a Community Build Day event. In 2017 Tucson artists and artists from all over the world, returned to Ajo for a third year of arts based collaborations and mural painting. We are now on our third biennial Ajo Street Art Happening!

Description: Ajo is in the Sonoran Desert, tucked away in Western Pima County in Arizona, 110 miles south of Phoenix and 130 miles west of Tucson. Ajo is landlocked with the Tohono O'odham Nation to the east, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to the south, and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and the Barry Goldwater Range to the north and west. The community of 3,500 has been economically depressed since the large open pit mine closed in the 80's following a strike for higher wages. The Plaza, built in 1917, serves as the central gathering place for the community and events such as the traditional 4th of July, Christmas Eve celebrations, our local Farmer’s Market, and many other events.

From March 21 - 24, 2019 an international mix of muralists will join the people of Ajo, local and international muralists, youth groups, and AmeriCorps National Service members for the biennial community arts collaboration.

I travel to Ajo usually about once per month and always draw inspiration from artistʻs alley and the surrounding area. Just out of curiosity, how many murals have been painted since the first street art happening in 2015?
We had lots of fun painting our Edible Ajo School Yard mural last weekend during the Ajo Street Art Happening!

Our mural stems from our collaborative work at the Ajo Unified School District #15 where we teach nutrition education and hands on gardening for the overall wellbeing of our students and community!
