Of all of the beloved crafts I cycle through, I believe that embroidery is my favorite. It’s meditative, and if you need a sense of accomplishment to boost your confidence, a small embroidery project is just the thing. Earlier this year I attended a class at an SCA event and learned the basics of goldwork, which was a brand new technique for me. Prompted by the class instructor Mistress Adair ( ) I followed a goldwork artist ( ) who creates the most amazing Tudor inspired skirt panels, as well as smaller projects, AND sells her patterns and kits!!
The first project here is my learning project from class that I finished into an ornament. I’ve used various sorts of kits over the years but I feel like these are revolutionary in that the gold pattern is printed in metallic vinyl and affixed to the fabric for you!! This not only provides the pattern, it acts as an underlayer of gold or silver that incorporates perfectly into the finished product. No background fabric to peek through my beginner attempts at chipwork!
Emboldened by the first attempt, I ordered the Rose Window kit. After staring at it for about a day I watched her tutorial then decided just to dive right in. The kit comes with nearly everything you need, you just need needles, your choice of frame or hoop, and glue for the jewels. I’ve been playing around with the jewels though and am considering these (last pic) sew on rhinestones from my tiara supplies. Not in time period I know but oh so shiny!!! I also have added a layer of linen to the back of the project for added sturdiness and to keep the silk from warping on the frame. Stay tuned for the finished product!!
