Some in the drag will try to break loose to find mama. They think she might be back on the bed ground, so when they think they can do it - they make a break for it.

“Right of Passage” - This painting is of a real incident that happened in Idaho years ago, up on the Lower Palisades Lake. My old friend Bob and I were packing in to the upper Palisades Lake to do some fishing when we saw a big bull moose coming down the trail. It was on a very narrow spot where there wasn’t very much room and I told Bob we better get off the trail as soon as we could because when that bull comes around the corner of the trail he’s going to be right in our face. I didn’t want to be having him spook our horses before the end of the lake or having him charge us, so we took the only place we could find off the trail - up the hill. The hill had a bunch of rocks and it was hard to get the horses up there, but we finally got them up off the trail and just in time. Right after, the bull moose came around the bend of the trail and he just kept a chugging on by. He was a big bull and I was glad we were up above him. He never even looked at us, he was on the move and focused on something else. However, I had the thought that the situation could make a good painting, so I painted it. Prints are available on my website.

This area is near the headwaters of the Green River in Wyoming, which is excellent grazing country. This painting depicts that time when everything is going right. Plenty of grass, water, and good horses, good dogs, and good weather. Just doesn’t get any better than that. “A Cool Sip” This is reminiscent of Lewis Falls in Yellowstone National Park. I didn’t paint it exactly the same, but it’s where I took my inspiration. The deer in the summer time are a reddish-brown color and their horns are in velvet so they’re fuzzy. This painting captures two bucks coming to water in the middle of the day. I actually painted this for my mother-in-law, which she enjoyed a lot.

Cowboys are no strangers to sunup. They’re up, in the saddle, and moving before the sun is up. It’s a good way to start the day, when you’re moving on a good horse and have been up before the sun so you have the chance to see it come up and greet the sun. In this painting I’m trying to depict a saying I read in an article once - “10 am and a day’s work done.” Cowboy’s often put in what most people do in a day before it’s even 10 am. It’s pretty cool. Use code SUNUP for 15% off all week.

Would you believe me if I said I once roped all four legs of a calf? It may or may not have been an accident, but I was pretty impressed with myself! Comment STORY and I’ll send you the full story. Similar to this painting, we had to doctor a calf and had it’s mamma breathing down our necks. This painting is titled “One Eye on Mamma”. 24x36 “On Top of the World”. Original painting currently available for purchase. These two cowboys have ridden their horses up on a high ridge on the west side of the Grand Tetons. They’re taking a lunch break and observing the beauty around them. It’s a beautiful day, they’re in a beautiful spot, and they can see for miles. They’re on top of the world.
