Not only was he the first black architect to become a member of the AIA, among the first to be admitted into Beaux-Arts Institutes and the College of Fellows. He was excellent and persevered. Orphaned and adopted, dissuaded in high school, he became a master draftsman due to drafting upside down (because a white man wouldn’t sit next to him) and designed almost 3000 buildings. .
