William King Museum of Art

William King Museum of Art WKMA features galleries showcasing art of the region and of the world, both contemporary and historic.

The William King Museum of Art is a non-profit regional art museum and arts education center housed in a historic 1913 former school. It is the only facility of its kind and Virginia’s only nationally accredited museum west of Roanoke. An average of nine exhibitions are mounted each year, showcasing art of the region and of the world. Programming includes artist talks, lectures, workshops, and oth

er special events. Two additional galleries include the Student Gallery, which displays works from area schools and colleges, and the Panoramic Gallery that features self-curated shows by local artists. These two galleries offer up to 24 additional exhibits a year. An extensive arts education program serves school and public audiences both within and outside of the facility. The Museum also features artist studios, reference library, research archives, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

William King Museum of Art is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition the “Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature.” The exhibition will include selections from a unique collection of illustration artwork originally designed to adorn books, covers and posters. Assembled by Stephen D. Korshak, the collection features a variety of artworks from some of the artists who laid the foundations for our collective visual imagination: Brian Froud, Arthur Rackham, Gustave Dore and Aubrey Beardsley among many others. Viewers will be able to see vivid scenes from classics like Alice in Wonderland, dramatic moments painted for pulp fiction covers and well-known characters like Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Gandalf. Among them will be fairies, witches, living skeletons, and plenty of aliens!

WKMA invites all of its guests to bring their sense of wonder and join us as we celebrate over a century of visual imagination!

The "Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature" will run from September 28th, 2026 to January 24th, 2027.

The “Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature” is an exhibition organized by the Korshak Collection on loan to WKMA and is part of the museum’s McGlothlin Exhibition Series.

A special thank you to our Annual Sponsors: Ballad Health Johnston Memorial Hospital, BurWil Construction Company, and The Martha Washington Inn & Spa.
