🩰✨ TUTU TUESDAY! ✨🩰

Who says a tutu has to be short? CHECK OUT this three year throwback of Highlands Ballet lovelies. On stage with Emory & Henry’s music & theatre department, these gals represented!

Before the tutu became the short, fluffy silhouette we often picture today, ballerinas were dancing in long, flowing skirts!

Meet the Romantic tutu—a soft, bell-shaped skirt that typically falls between the calf and ankle. Made of delicate layers of tulle, it creates an ethereal, floating effect that became a hallmark of Romantic-era ballet in the 19th century.

Designed to make ballerinas appear almost weightless, the Romantic tutu is especially associated with beloved classics like Giselle and La Sylphide.

✨ A little ballet history, a lot of tulle, and timeless elegance!

🩰 FROM SOFT SLIPPERS TO POINTE SHOES

When we think of ballet today, dancing en pointe feels almost inseparable from the art form.

But it wasn’t always that way.

In the early 1800s, dancers began experimenting with rising onto the tips of their toes. Then, in 1832, Marie Taglioni famously performed La Sylphide, helping establish pointe work as a defining feature of Romantic ballet.

Her shoes were nothing like the pointe shoes dancers wear today. They were soft and offered very little support. Balance, strength and technique were everything.

As ballet evolved, so did the shoes—and so did the training required to use them.

This is where ballet’s great teaching traditions become so important.

The Cecchetti Method was built around the systematic development of strength, balance, coordination and control—giving dancers the technical foundation to meet the demands of classical ballet.

From the Romantic ballerinas of the 19th century to the dancers of today, the tools may have changed, but one thing remains:

Technique is what makes the artistry possible.

✨ The history of ballet isn’t just the history of steps. It’s the history of how dancers learned to perform them.

Today was such an INCREDIBLE day at Highlands Ballet Company as we welcomed Silent Watch MC-Little Chicago, TN for a ride benefiting the HBC Scholarship Program! 💙

We had such a great time having everyone at the studio, and we are so grateful for the support, laughter, and generosity the motorcycle community brought with them. Because of events like this, children who may not otherwise have the opportunity are able to experience the joy of dance and the arts. 🩰✨

Their support helps make a difference in the lives of children in need while helping keep the arts accessible in our community. We are truly thankful for everyone who rode, donated, volunteered, and helped make today possible!
And let’s be honest… it is ALWAYS a good time when you have bikers in tutus at the studio! 😂🏍️🩰

Thank you for spending the day with us, supporting our dancers and the HBC Scholarship Program. We loved having you at the studio! 💙

Once again...THANK YOU!
