AN EXCERPT FROM A WRITING TITLED “EXISTENCE”

As a watchman, my eyes were always open, hyper-vigilant, scanning the horizon. I learned to read the shifts in the room, the tones of voices, the subtle signs of danger or sudden change before they could blindside me again. But I paired that vigilance with a deep, defensive independence. I pulled inward. I built a wall of stoicism, deciding, consciously or unconsciously, that relying on external things for security was a gamble I wasn’t willing to take anymore. If I was the only one I could truly depend on, then I was the only one who could keep me safe. The boy who used to feel protected by a giant German Shepherd and a complete home had transformed into a little soldier, standing guard over his own life.
