Uganda Selects " Kimote" as Official Submission for the 98th Academy Awards

Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Academy Selection Committee - UASC is proud to announce the selection of Kimote, directed by Hassan Mageye, as Uganda’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.

Following a rigorous and thorough evaluation process, the committee reviewed eight outstanding films released in the past year. Each film was carefully assessed for artistic merit, storytelling, cultural representation, and technical excellence. After thoughtful deliberations, Kimote emerged as the best choice to represent Uganda on this prestigious global stage.

The film was selected for its powerful narrative that authentically captures the complexities of Ugandan society while weaving a compelling and emotionally resonant story. The film’s masterful direction, combined with compelling performances by the cast, striking cinematography, and a thoughtful script, sets it apart as an exceptional example of cinematic artistry. Its exploration of poignant themes, cultural depth, and universal human experiences makes it highly relatable to diverse audiences worldwide.

Since its approval by the Academy in 2019, the UASC has served as the country's official Oscar selection committee with the mandate to select one outstanding non- English language film annually to compete in the Best International Feature Film category. This process underscores Uganda’s growing presence in the global cinema landscape and highlights the rich diversity of Ugandan storytelling and talent.
Kimote’s selection is a testament to the creative vitality within Uganda’s film industry and reaffirms the country’s commitment to nurturing and promoting its cinematic arts internationally. The UASC congratulates Hassan Mageye and the entire cast and crew for their exceptional work that truly resonates with the spirit of Ugandan culture and beyond.

We look forward to the film’s journey in the 2026 Academy Awards, and encourage Ugandans and film lovers worldwide to support Kimote as it seeks to bring Uganda’s voice to the international community through the power of cinema.

PRE-SELECTION OF TEMBELE AS UGANDA’S OFFICIAL SUBMISSION TO THE 95TH ACADEMY AWARDS (THE OSCARS)

On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, the Uganda Academy Selection Committee (UASC) invited Ugandan filmmakers to submit their qualifying feature films for consideration for the Best International Feature Film award at the forthcoming 95th edition of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, known as the Academy Awards or simply the Oscars.

The submission call closed on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 after receiving three film submissions; NALWAWO directed by Emokor Eric, NOVEMBER TEAR directed by Nondo Richard and TEMBELE directed by Moriss Herbert Mugisha.

After an intense judging process and evaluation, the UASC has today pre-selected TEMBELE by director Moriss Herbert Mugisha as Uganda’s official entry for the 2023 Oscar awards in the category of Best International Film.

The pre-selection is only provisional pending the film’s fulfilment of all Academy eligibility criteria ahead of the Oct 03, 2022 Oscar submission deadline for all country entries.

Upon fulfilment of all eligibility criteria, Tembele will mark the very first time Uganda is officially submitting an entry to the prestigious awards since the launch of UASC in July 2019.

The film zooms into the very soul of a man working the garbage truck in the city as he battles with a mental setback after losing a son.

The film’s human story and authenticity makes it a unique piece of home-grown art worthy of celebrating on the global platform that is the Oscars.

We therefore implore all relevant government agencies, cultural entities, the media and every Ugandan to support the film to meet all its outstanding requirements, including showing at the cinema for at least seven consecutive days, before the October 03 deadline.

Yours,
GODFREY MUSINGUZI
UASC Chairperson
