Daala kikya sooboka? ( is it still possible?)
Oil on canvas
In this body of work , am retrospectivly taking an historical roller coaster to how far my food cultures/ cuisines have come , drifting from the matooke (plantain) cusines rituals and it's Norms to preparation and presentation
First things first a cuisine is a distinct and coherent body of food preparation based on one or more starchy staples, a set of spice combinations, complementary tastes, particular textures iconic rituals and a local intelligible repertoire of meats, vegetables and starchy textures forming a structure of both preparation and presentation that make a meal
In Buganda a woman wore along dress, wrapped her body with another piece of fabric (sarong or lessu) around her waist to act as her eplone for those who could afford wrapping, knelt down while peeling matooke (plantain) in veneration of the people to indulge the food later. sitting on elevated platforms like stools and chairs was lampooned mercilessly it postured the woman in a position were the food could be sighted between or below her legs and with mere spreading/ opening her legs slightly, the act was apprehended as bad omen and jinxing the food once the v***a flashed with the food despite wearing undergarments.the platformed sitting while peeling plantain (matooke) was greatly reprimanded
Matooke was peeled knelt down , put in banana leaves in a source pan, wrapped together with banana fibres, water added in the saucepan ready to be heated on a modest fire to steam . Peculiarly today it's put in plastic bags and sacks which kills the pleasant aroma that would have been obtained from steaming in banana leaves
Knelling is the apotheosis of displine and morals in Buganda , designated to children and female genders and emasculating to the male gender, femine cohorts suppose that this is subjugation. knelling to greet, serve food or for any reasons is peculiarly done when push comes to shove this day and age
Feminist phony purports are that knelling for husbands and fathers is obselete and should be frowned upon . This peculiar transmute and culture decadence is constituted by the prevalent western culture(+slide3)
