Serena Williams has dethroned Maria Sharapova to become the world’s highest-paid female athlete, according to Forbes.

Sharapova, who is suspended from tennis after a positive test for meldonium at the Australian Open in January, had topped sport’s leading money earners for the past 11 years. But Williams has leapfrogged her former on-court rival by earning £20million over the the past 12 months.

The American world No1, who missed out on a 20th Grand Slam title last week following defeat to Garbine Muguruza in the French Open final, has banked £53.4m in on-court earnings alone during an illustrious career.

On court last year, Williams once again dominated the women’s game with three Grand Slam titles and just three defeats in 56

ALEXIS Sanchez was named the winner of the Copa America Golden Ball following Chile's shootout victory over Argentina on Sunday.

The award is given to the player of the tournament and Arsenal star Sanchez was honoured after scoring three goals and creating another in six games as Chile successfully defended the crown they won last year.

It was a repeat of the 2015 final as Argentina again lost to their neighbours on penalties and failed to end a 23-year wait for a major international trophy.

Wayne Rooney has revealed how Bayer Leverkusen were left in awe as Ryan Giggs rolled back the years in the UEFA Champions League.

Giggs, who celebrates his 40th birthday on Friday, produced another superb display of his long and outstanding career in Wednesday's 5-0 romp at the BayArena.

Sami Hyypia's men simply had no answer to the Welshman's class, as some of their players just wondered how it was possible.

"I've run out of things to say about Ryan," Rooney said.

"Actually, during the game, the Bayer centre-half was asking how he is still playing at that age.

"During the game, the Bayer centre-half was asking how he is still playing at that age. I certainly won't be playing at that age, that's for sure. His composure on the ball is great."

"I certainly won't be playing at that age, that's for sure. His composure on the ball is great."

With Giggs still capable of performing at such a high level, he might not even get his birthday weekend off given United visit Tottenham on Sunday needing to get their Premier League campaign back on track.

Rooney will not be getting the weekend off. Not after his four assists in what turned out to be United's biggest away win in Europe since 1964, and a victory margin they have exceeded only once on their European travels in their entire history.

"It's a team game but it's always great when you can help your team-mates score goals," Rooney said. "It was a perfect away match.

"We played very well, we defended well, there was some great counter-attacking football, we played with power, pace and composure.

"It was really as good an away performance as you can get."

David Moyes was delighted with his side's performance in the 5-0 win over Leverkusen, and reserved special praise for Ryan Giggs.

Rooney also had words of praise for Shinji Kagawa, who revelled in his central position after being given the rare opportunity of operating behind a main frontman as he prefers.

United have now booked their place in the last 16, although they do need a point when they face Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford in a fortnight to ensure they progress as group winners.

Before that is the clash with Tottenham at White Hart Lane against a Spurs side still smarting from their humiliating 6-0 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday.

Yet United can hardly afford to be charitable after they conceded a last-minute equaliser to drop two points at Cardiff a couple of hours later.

"Obviously, it was disappointing to lose a goal towards the end at Cardiff (on Sunday)," Rooney said. "We didn't play as well as we can.

"So, whilst we are all delighted to put on a great performance in the Champions League, now we are looking forward to playing Spurs."

Bayern Munich's progress through the group stage of the Champions League may have been serene but their preparations for a record-breaking 10th successive win have been considerably less so.

The German club can set a new competition best with a win over CSKA Moscow but the trip to Russia has so far not gone to plan.

Bayern's plane was 45 minutes late arriving, the team's coach then got further delayed in Moscow's notorious traffic and with snow falling on the Khimki Arena pitch, they could not even train as their kit was stuck on the city's snarled-up roads.

"We have to deal with these conditions," coach Pep Guardiola told a press conference.

"Before the first game CSKA had a long flight to us. We have a highly professional approach.

"Although we are already qualified, tackling the game with the conditions we have to deal with in Moscow, after a long flight from Munich, it will be a matter of the head.

"In November, at this stage, CSKA is very dangerous. We have to play great if we want to win."

If Bayern are to surpass Barcelona's record of 2002-03 - and equal a club record of five successive away wins in the competition - they will have to do it without their strongest side.

Striker Mario Mandzukic was left behind because of a calf injury, meaning 18-year-old reserve star Julian Green makes a first appearance in the senior squad, while Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Xherdan Shaqiri, Claudio Pizarro, Diego Contento and Holger Badstuber were already ruled out.

CSKA head coach Leonid Slutsky admits his side have a difficult task against what he believes is currently the best team in the world.

"We can do differently (from the 3-0 defeat in their first meeting) but this is unlikely to directly affect the outcome," he told a press conference.

"In the Bundesliga Bayern beat last season's (Champions League) finalists Borussia Dortmund 3-0 (on Saturday). This is the best team in the world.

"Our task is to play with maximum quality. Moments will still occur, Bayern create them against every team, but we need more quality in attack than we did in the first game."

Midfielder Alan Dzagoev is unlikely to feature after only returning to training yesterday from a hamstring problem, while striker Seydou Doumbia is a doubt with a thigh injury.

Champions League: Dortmund beat Napoli 3-1 to maintain hopes of reaching the last 16

Borussia Dortmund can continue to dream about making another run towards the Champions League final after closing the gap on Group F rivals Napoli with a convincing 3-1 victory over the Italians at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday evening.

Beaten finalists in May, and victims to Bayern Munich once again at the weekend, Jurgen Klopp's men had struggled to recreate last season's swashbuckling group-stage performances and found themselves trailing Serie A runners-up Napoli by three points ahead of Tuesday night's encounter.

But an early penalty from Marco Reus gave them the upper hand before second-half goals from Jakub Blaszczykowski and substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ruled Lorenzo Insigne's response irrelevant.

They now need only match or better Napoli's result against Arsenal when they visit bottom side Marseille in a fortnight to ensure their progression to the last 16.

A tepid start which betrayed the frantic game that followed gave way in the 10th minute when Federico Fernandez unwisely pulled Robert Lewandowski's shirt in the area.

Referee Carlos Velasco Carballo had no choice but to award the penalty, which Reus dispatched to Jose Reina's left with a minimum of fuss.

Dortmund sought to hit their opponents while they were down and, after Lewandowski screwed a shot wide from close range, Reina was forced to make a stunning save and deny Reus from distance.

The resistance allowed Napoli to bite back, Gonzalo Higuain first testing Roman Weidenfeller's reflexes before glancing a Dries Mertens free-kick into his gloves.

Jose Callejon sparked a goalmouth scramble as his sharp strike rattled a post, Valon Behrami stealing onto the rebound only to slam it against Weidenfeller.

Dortmund caught their breath and streaked up the other end, where Reina was waiting to disappoint them with some heroic goalkeeping.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan bent the ball from an improbable angle in the 33rd minute, Reina tipping it round the post at full stretch before defying the odds to block a Lewandowski screamer two minutes later.

Both stoppers were afforded some time to gather their thoughts before the break but it was lucky for Dortmund that Weidenfeller stayed focused until the half-time whistle.

Pablo Armero conjured up the last moment of magic at the end of 45 entertaining minutes, loping down the left wing and blasting with power at the German keeper, who palmed the ball to safety.

Dortmund were the much brighter side when play resumed, though, and a 15-minute onslaught yielded a vital second goal.

Reus had twice tried his luck against Reina to no avail before supplying the killer pass for Blaszczykowski on the hour mark.

The ball that broke the Spanish keeper's resolve was passed in from the left from Reus to Blaszczykowski and the Pole tucked it home with relative ease.

Napoli, however, halved the deficit 11 minutes later.

Higuain had been the biggest threat to Weidenfeller but he instead turned provider for the Italian response.

The Argentinian looked up from his position on the left wing to spot Insigne in good space and the young striker swept the ball into the back of the net.

This was Napoli's opportunity to force the issue but it was a chance they would not manage to take as substitute Aubameyang put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute.

Lewandowski, who had had a reasonably quiet second half, was perfectly placed to tee up his Gabonese team-mate for an easy conversion in the six-yard box.

In the dying stages, Gokhan Inler and Duvan Zapata both threatened to make an impact from the Napoli bench by driving shots at Weidenfeller, but Dortmund had done more than enough to reignite their push for European glory.

Champions League: Ajax earn a superb 2-1 victory over Barcelona

Ajax earned a superb 2-1 win over Barcelona to keep alive their hopes of qualifying from Champions League Group H.

Ajax took a shock 2-0 half-time lead as both Thulani Serero and Danny Hoesen netted their first European goals.

Xavi scored a penalty after Joel Veltman was sent off but Ajax withstood fierce pressure in the remainder of the second half.

With AC Milan beating Celtic in the other game in the group, the result was vital for Ajax and they now face the Italians in their final game with the winners reaching the knockout stages.

The losers of that game will play in the Europa League, with Celtic eliminated from Europe with a game to spare.

Ajax midfielder Lasse Schone was booked for an early foul on Neymar but soon made a more positive impact, setting up fellow Dane Viktor Fischer for a volley which was saved by Jose Pinto.

The keeper could do nothing in the 19th minute, though, when Ricardo van Rhijn's cross picked out the well-timed run of Serero, who arrived unmarked 10 yards out to sidefoot home the opener.

Fischer sent another volley over the bar and Schone curled an effort just wide before Barca finally threatened through Neymar. The Brazilian shimmied past two defenders but saw his shot deflected wide.

Gerard Pique was booked for a foul on Ajax captain Nicolai Boilesen, who had to be replaced by midfielder Christian Poulsen with Daley Blind moving to left-back.

Cesc Fabregas was booked for dissent six minutes before half-time, ruling him out of Barca's final group game against Celtic.

And three minutes later, Ajax took a 2-0 lead as Fischer seized on defensive uncertainty and when his shot was blocked by Pinto, Hoesen followed up to score.

Things took a turn Barcelona's way just three minutes into the second half though. Van Rhijn's under-hit back-pass forced last man Veltman to bring down Neymar and, after the right-back was sent off, Xavi converted from 12 yards.

Neymar was booked after his attempted bicycle kick caught Van Rhijn in the head, and he then tried a lob which the back-pedalling Jasper Cillessen tipped over.

Barca substitute Patric Gabarron volleyed wide and their frustration mounted in the closing stages. Pedro's penalty appeal was dismissed and Neymar was denied by an offside flag as somehow Ajax stood firm.

Champions League: Chelsea progress to knockout phase despite loss to Basel
Chelsea are through to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages despite a 1-0 loss to Basel at St Jakob Park.

Jose Mourinho's men rarely threatened and failed to have a single shot on target in the 90 minutes as Basel completed a shock double over the 2012 champions.

The winner came with just three minutes left as the hugely impressive Egyptian Mohamed Salah broke clear and slotted home past Petr Cech.

Qualification to the knock-out stages of the Champions League was the only consolation Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could take.

But with Schalke drawing 0-0 at Steaua Bucharest, Chelsea are through despite their defeat, while Basel have moved into second and a draw with the Germans in their final match will see them through with the English outfit.

The Blues, 2-1 winners at St Jakob Park in the Europa League semi-final first

leg in April, were under pressure from the start on this occasion.

Chelsea might have gone in front after 15 minutes but a Branislav Ivanovic cross was just out of Samuel Eto'o's reach.

Otherwise, it was all Basel and Cech saved an inswinging Taulant Xhaka free-kick, reached to claw away a dangerous Valentin Stocker cross and turned a deflected Fabian Frei shot round the post.

When he was beaten by Ivan Ivanov's toe-poke at a corner, John Obi Mikel scrambled clear.

Despite losing 1-0 to Basel, Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech acknowledged their progress as the most important thing.

Cech then tipped over Salah's drive from the edge of the area and from the resulting corner, the Blues survived a penalty claim against Lampard when the ball ricocheted off the midfielder's arm inside the area, with referee Stephane Lannoy deeming no spot-kick.

Chelsea deployed the same three-man midfield of Mikel, Lampard and Ramires which performed so well in Saturday's 3-0 win at West Ham, with Willian's inclusion for Hazard the only change.

Basel, though, bossed central areas and the movement of Frei and Salah caused particular trouble.

The pair combined and Salah struck from 12 yards, a deflection almost seeing the ball elude Cech, who was on his knees when he palmed the ball over.

Glenn Hoddle and Niall Quinn discuss whether Chelsea used the right tactics in their 1-0 defeat against Basel.

Marco Streller fired wide from Salah's cross under pressure from John Terry before Cesar Azpilicueta recovered to execute a well-timed tackle on the winger as he shaped to shoot inside Chelsea's area.

Fernando Torres, fit again after missing three games with an adductor injury, replaced Eto'o after 42 minutes when the Cameroon striker was taken off on a stretcher after falling awkwardly and Eden Hazard followed him into the fray 10 minutes into the second half.

Torres and Hazard combined but the latter's heavy pass to Ramires halted a promising move.

Serey Die was booked for a foul on Hazard, presenting Chelsea with a free-kick from a promising position, but Lampard's shot was poor and Ivanovic cleared.

The Blues were more robust in the second half, but even when Yann Sommer's poor clearance presented Hazard with the ball the visitors contrived to fluff the attack.

With the game becoming more stretched as the match entered the final 10 minutes, Die fired wide at the end of a Basel counter attack and then Fabian Schar's long-range effort was held by Cech.

Kevin De Bruyne was introduced for Willian with four minutes to go but from the restart, Basel broke and scored.

Salah got in behind the Chelsea defence to meet Schar's brilliant long-range pass and drove down the right before lofting a neat finish into the net.

Anything's possible
Arsenal made it four Champions League wins from five games with victory at home to Marseille on Tuesday evening. Adam Bate was there to see a comfortable win built on solid foundations that hinted at a growing belief that the Gunners can have rather loftier ambitions
Even before Arsenal's comfortable 2-0 win over Marseille at Emirates Stadium, visiting boss Elie Baup was an admirer of the Gunners. "They are the best side in our group and are going to qualify," he told reporters. "When you get to the last 16 and the quarter-finals, the teams are all very close together. However, this season Arsenal have an undeniable attacking quality."

Wenger reaction

Nothing the experienced French coach saw on Tuesday evening is likely to have changed his opinion. A glance at the team-sheet prior to kick-off indicated that - with hopes of progression long since gone - French resistance might be minimal as Baup elected to leave star players, such as Mathieu Valbuena and Florian Thauvin, on the bench. Jack Wilshere's delicious goal, cutting in from the right wing after just 30 seconds, confirmed the suspicions.

As it happened, the second goal took rather longer than both Arsene Wenger and the home crowd would have liked. Aaron Ramsey was denied from close range by the feet of the visiting goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, but then looked to have made amends soon after when he bought a debatable penalty with a clever turn on the edge of the box. However, Mesut Ozil's spot-kick was a disappointment, a checked run-up failing to fool Mandanda.

It was left to Wilshere himself to double the lead and make sure of the points after the break, converting from an Ozil square pass after more good work from Ramsey on the right. It was fully deserved and Baup, it seems, is part of a growing fan club. Jurgen Klopp, coach of fellow Group F rivals Borussia Dortmund, recently praised Wenger's side for their youthful exuberance allied to a rare technical proficiency - and here it was for all to see. "They could go to a final and win it," said Klopp. Before adding the significant caveat: "As long as they do not play against Bayern Munich."

Of course, that is exactly what they did last season - eliminated on away goals after a 3-3 draw over two legs. It was an outcome rather put into context by the subsequent results that saw Bayern put 11 goals past the current champions of Italy and Spain without reply. There are times when elimination can still offer encouragement.

27/11/2013

The problem for Arsenal supporters is that it is becoming difficult to be persuaded of the vagaries of cup competition - the belief that a fair wind might carry any team all the way - when all evidence points to an obvious limit to their ambitions. Arsenal have successfully negotiated the opening group stages in each of the last 13 seasons. Only nine-time winners Real Madrid can better that record. It is taking the next step that has proven the tricky part.

Wilshere reaction

But what Baup and Klopp might have picked up on is a growing resilience to this particular incarnation of Wenger's team. The attractive football remains, supplemented by the undisguised brilliance of Ozil that has lifted those forward-thinking players around him. And yet, just as impressive has been the solid base upon which the familiar passing game is now being constructed.

It was there at the weekend against Southampton as the Gunners kept their fifth clean sheet of the season on their own patch. "It could have been a very difficult game if we had conceded the first goal," acknowledged Wenger in his programme notes for Tuesday's game. "That is where maybe we have improved in our defensive stability when the game is difficult."

Club captain Thomas Vermaelen echoed those sentiments in his own address to the club's supporters. "It might not have been the most beautiful win by us, but it is certainly important," he said of the weekend victory. "In fact, sometimes I think it can be even more important to get wins like that throughout the season; when you are not at your best but you do enough to get the job done."

The fact that the skipper cannot get into this team says much for the partnership Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have forged in the heart of the defence. But for Andre Ayew's late consolation in the first meeting between these sides, Arsenal would have four clean sheets from five Champions League games and the understanding between the pair has been a feature of that improved solidity. With Mathieu Flamini in front of them, there is a maturity to this team.
