The Gishu, also known as the Gisu or Bagisu, are an ethnic group indigenous to the eastern region of Uganda. They primarily inhabit the slopes of Mount Elgon, which straddles the border between Uganda and Kenya. The Gishu people are renowned for their rich cultural heritage, which includes vibrant traditions, customs, and practices.
The Gishu people have elaborate rites of passage ceremonies that mark important milestones in an individual's life. The most significant of these ceremonies is the Imbalu circumcision ritual, which takes place every two years. It is a coming-of-age ceremony for young men, symbolizing their transition from boyhood to manhood. The circumcision is performed without anesthesia and is accompanied by traditional dances, music, feasting, and celebrations.
