In 2024, Nigerian artists earned $37 million from Spotify alone, proving that Africa’s music industry is booming—if you know how to tap into it. Meanwhile, Uganda’s streaming revenue remains alarmingly low, and the worst part? Our artists aren’t even discussing how to fix it.

Low streaming adoption, poor royalty collection, and weak digital infrastructure are keeping us behind. But without serious conversations and action on publishing, distribution, and monetization, we’ll keep missing out on millions.

2024: The Year African Music Rewrote Its Own Distribution Rules

Forget waiting for global platforms to validate us - African artists are now creating their own pathways to international recognition. This year proved that our music ecosystem isn't just growing; it's fundamentally transforming how global audiences discover and engage with African sounds.

Key industry shifts that caught my attention:

1• TikTok's game-changing move: Expanding their "Add to Music" feature to 41 African countries wasn't just a technical update. It's a recognition that "the synergy between the music industry and social media is undeniable." Understanding user-generated content metrics is now more crucial than chasing viral moments.

2• Rising talent breaking barriers: Take Joshua Baraka, whose "Growing Pains" EP achieved 30 million streams - the highest for a Ugandan artist this year. This isn't just a number; it's a statement about the quality and global appeal of our music.

3• Streaming economics: African music's market is evolving rapidly. With streaming revenue exceeding $100 million in 2022, we're not just participating in the global music economy - we're reshaping it.

From co hosting "Night Sip" on CBS FM to organizing the first Spotify Masterclass in Uganda, my work this year has been about bridging knowledge gaps. We're not just distributing music; we're building infrastructures that empower artists to understand and leverage digital platforms.

Looking ahead to 2025: The focus is crystal clear. We'll continue developing robust digital distribution channels, providing artists with the tools and education needed to transform potential into global success.

The narrative isn't about being discovered anymore. It's about creating our own spotlight
