Artwork outside the white cube is always interacting with its environment. Cotton Blues in the context of Kampala, Makindye Hill, puts the artwork in conversation with equatorial light, architectural features and sounds of aliveness. It is here that the biography of this ongoing series can evolve - from where the images were taken in Benin, to Laeïla Adjovi’s (.iyabo.adjovi ) studio in Dakar, to the public debut in the 15th Dakar Biennale at the Palace of Justice and now at Latitude 0º. As a practice of light, photography does something else with its subjectivity when adding material of glass - creating new interactions with space.

Is there a place that you want Cotton Blues to light up?

Artist Talk: Confluence – Narratives of Fragmentation and Synthesis

Borderlands Art hosted a private artist talk featuring Gloria Kiconco and Charity Atukunda, two artists from Confluence, in an intimate discussion about their creative processes and the themes of fragmentation and synthesis in their work. This exclusive event brought together collectors, cultural activators, and art enthusiasts for a meaningful exchange of ideas.
Gloria Kiconco shared insights into her zine-making practice, where she explores migration, cultural shifts, and personal storytelling through the use of barkcloth paper and associated printed pull-outs. Her work challenges the idea of art as static, instead embracing ephemerality and interaction as essential aspects of her creative expression.
Charity Atukunda discussed how her work challenges our understanding of culture while emphasizing the importance of connecting with heritage. She also spoke about her use of diverse materials and approaches, blending human, technological, and natural elements to explore evolving identities. Through her layered compositions, she investigates the coexistence of tradition and innovation, inviting reflection on how personal and collective narratives take shape in contemporary cultural landscapes.
This closed-door event provided a space for meaningful dialogue on how personal and collective narratives evolve through artistic practice. Confluence continues to highlight the ways in which separation and unity influence creative expression, fostering a deeper understanding of identity, heritage, and transformation.

The Intermingled - Elsadig Janka ()

Showing for the first time at |  (Lookout, Booth L3)

The multiple exposure work of Janka, taken during the Sudanese revolution in 2019, shows a dynamic form of resistance. In this ongoing photographic series he shows how activism, urban infrastructure, and daily life ‘intermingle’ on the streets of Khartoum. Looking back, now that Sudan has descended into civil war, this work functions as a memorial to the fight for democracy as well as a celebration of solidarity. Janka has been fully embedded in the Sudanese struggle for freedom by participating in rallies. It is from this ground-level perspective that the series emerged.

Vivas - Manuela Lara ()

Showing for the first time at |  (Lookout, Booth L3)

Lara’s Van D**e Brown photography on hand made paper presents feminine stories of resistance through portraiture. Over four years she worked with female social leaders in Colombia to reframe the narratives of suffering that dominate the post-war discourse. Her photographic technique is deeply intertwined with cultural symbolism—embellishing the images with symbols that resonate personally with the subjects, revealing a new language of resistance and self-styling. Similarly the plantain, wool, cotton, chontaduro, and damagua papers bring the natural landscapes and textures familiar to the regions of Buenaventura, La Guajira, Suatatausa and Cundinamarca into a material conversation with each other. The stories of struggle, indigenous resistance, and Afro-resilience coming from these Colombian women has the power to connect with local and international collector audiences.

Borderlands Art debuted at the in the prestigious Lookout Section |  ( Booth L3)

For the first time in South Africa, we showcased the work of emerging artists Elsadig Janka () (Sudan) & Manuela Lara () (Colombia). These two artists use contemporary art as a form of liberation, reframing narratives of violence through activism and resilience. Their powerful works offer thought-provoking narratives of resistance, social conflict, and cultural resilience, framing contemporary art as a vehicle for political and social commentary.

Rooted in pan-African perspectives, Borderlands Art is an agile space concerned with issues of environment, conflict & repair. Borderlands uses exhibitions, events, & research to foster critical inquiry and activism. Our gallery is a form of sustainable action that connects the market to the meaning making of contemporary art. We do this by connecting collectors and institutions to social & environmentally engaged artists.
