Last month we travelled to Abidjian to help with a Boiler Room event centred on Biama.

Born out of Yopougon and pushed through street dances, phone videos and neighbourhood sound systems, Biama takes the inheritance of coupé décalé and drives it into faster, stranger and more physical territory.

The rhythm is relentless!! The dancing is theatrical, acrobatic, almost unstable. Faces, shoulders, knees and sudden breaks all become part of the music.

A young Lawrence Okello performing with him Amadina ensemble.

Lawrence Okello belongs to a lineage of Ugandan traditional musicians, singers and instrumentalists, with music passed down as family knowledge rather than taught as formal repertoire. The son of Alex Oketch, he grew up inside a living practice of string instruments, xylophones, voice and percussion.

A master of amadinda, adungu, endingidi and drums, Okello’s work carries this inheritance forward without freezing it as folklore. Through projects like Amadinda Uganda (featured here) and Amadinda Sound System, he has pushed ancestral Ugandan instruments into new settings, placing inherited forms in dialogue with contemporary performance, collaboration and electronic sound.
