"Uniting Northern Uganda Through the Power of Dance"
Launched in 2013, Pyem Myel is a bi-annual dance competition held in Gulu City, Northern Uganda. The name, derived from the Luo language, translates to "Dance Battle" — a fitting title for a festival that b
rings together the region’s most talented dance groups for an electrifying showcase of rhythm, creativity, and cultural pride. Organized by Splendid Uganda, an events company founded by creative entrepreneur Eric Onono (popularly known as Riky Bird) in 2012, Pyem Myel has grown to become one of the most anticipated cultural events in Northern Uganda. With a mission to inspire, unite, and empower youth through performing arts, the competition offers a vibrant platform for dancers from both traditional and contemporary backgrounds to compete for prizes, trophies, and recognition. The event is proudly sponsored by Pine Avenue5, a leading entertainment and music brand based in Gulu. Over the years, Pyem Myel has served as more than just a competition—it’s a social hub that fosters youth interaction, talent discovery, and cultural expression. It continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening Northern Uganda’s creative industry. Recognized by national media outlets like the Daily Monitor and Sqoop Uganda, Pyem Myel has earned its place as a beacon of artistic excellence and community engagement. The event is known for its high-energy performances, glamorous presentation, and a spirit of inclusivity that reflects the resilience and diversity of Northern Uganda’s youth.
