MINISTER AKELLO AKORI CHALLENGES ACHOLI TO EMBRACE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES AS SHE GRACES OJOK JACOB OULANYAH THANKSGIVING
OMORO DISTRICT: Hon. Beatrice Akello Akori, Minister of State for Northern Uganda, yesterday represented the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Oboth Oboth, as Chief Guest at the Thanksgiving Ceremony of Ojok Jacob Oulanyah in Omoro District.
Minister Akello Akori commended Ojok Jacob Oulanyah for his hard work, dedication and service to the people, describing him as a blessing to the people of Omoro District and Uganda at large.
In her address, the Minister urged the people of Omoro and the wider Acholi sub-region to fully embrace and responsibly utilise Government programmes aimed at transforming livelihoods and fighting household poverty, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, NUSAF 4 and the cattle restocking programme.
She issued a strong warning against misuse of funds under the cattle restocking programme, emphasising that beneficiaries must use the money strictly for purchasing livestock as intended. She noted that Government will undertake assessments to monitor the implementation of the programme and ensure accountability.
Minister Akello Akori called upon LC1 and LC2 leaders, councillors, Members of Parliament, ministers and other leaders to actively monitor beneficiaries and ensure that restocking funds are used for their intended purpose. She explained that proper utilisation of the funds will strengthen the programme and create room for other deserving households that have not yet benefited.
The Minister emphasised that if the people of Acholi make proper use of PDM, NUSAF 4 and cattle restocking interventions, the region can make significant strides towards eliminating poverty.
She further noted that communities in other parts of Uganda are yearning for Government restocking programmes and would wish to benefit from similar interventions. She therefore urged the people of Acholi to support the programme by using the funds responsibly and for their intended purposes. She also pledged to work closely with the Acholi Parliamentary Group, led by Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, to advocate for increased funding so that more households can benefit.
On education, Minister Akello Akori assured the people of continued opportunities through the State House scholarship programme, noting that 11 best-performing students from each district in the Acholi sub-region are selected annually to pursue science-related courses. She welcomed reports that this year, 11 students from Omoro, alongside students from other districts, were enrolled in universities under the scholarship programme.
The ceremony also witnessed the handover of 60 computers to Omoro District by the Minister of ICT, Hon. Alioni Odria, to support teaching and learning in secondary schools across the district.
Minister Akello Akori also congratulated H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for what she described as continued commitment to fulfilling Government programmes and supporting the fight against poverty in Acholi and Northern Uganda. She cited interventions such as PDM, cattle restocking, NUSAF 4, State House scholarships and compensation relating to the Acholi war debt as some of the initiatives supporting socio-economic transformation in the region.
She called upon communities and leaders to take ownership of Government programmes, ensure accountability and maximise the opportunities provided to improve household incomes, strengthen livelihoods and accelerate development across Northern Uganda.
