A Closer Look at High-Frequency Trading

Once, stocks were traded through the open outcry system. Today fast, interconnected computers have mostly replaced the traders shouting prices on the floors of stock exchanges. Joe Saluzzi is a head of equity trading at Themis Trading in New Jersey. “The equity market has changed. It’s no longer what you see on TV, it’s no longer guys with colored jackets running around the floor anymore. The equity market is a bunch of co-located computers strung together by a bunch of wires, everyone trying to race to zero. The speed of light is the goal.” Computers can process stock trades in thousandths of a second. Andrew Haines of Gain Capital is an online broker. “A millisecond can mean millions of dollars to the success of your strategy. Having a one, two, three millisecond advantage over other traders may mean that you get into a trade at a preferable price.” Andrew Haines says an estimated seventy percent of all stock trades are high-frequency trades made with complex computer models. Stocks may be held for only seconds. But fast trades are also blamed for big moves in stock prices. On May sixth, two thousand ten, a leading measure of American stocks briefly fell about nine percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average then recovered much of those losses by the end of trading that day. The Securities and Exchange Commission ordered steps to prevent future “flash crashes” like that one. Joel Hasbrouck of New York University says those steps are working. “They’re called circuit-breakers, and basically what they mean is that when a stock has moved by a large amount in a short period of time, there’s a trading halt.” Joe Saluzzi of Themis Trading says the main problem with high-speed trading is an unbalanced market. “The stock market used to be a predictor of the future economy. Now I think the stock market is a backwards predictor. It’s forecasting the next microsecond move. It’s not forecasting the next six months, because most of the volume is being dominated by guys who could care less what goes on in six months. So, how could you think the price is being set correctly?” But Joel Hasbrouck says high-speed trading can reduce sharp rises or drops in stock prices. “In normal circumstances, high-frequency traders act as market-makers. That means they stand by passively waiting to buy or sell from whoever comes into the market needing to trade. In that capacity, they actually help stabilize the market.”

How Negative Interest Rates Work

By Matthew Johnston | Updated February 11, 2016

Interest rates are generally assumed to be the price paid to borrow money. For example, an annualized 2% interest rate on a $100 loan means that the borrower must repay the initial loan amount plus an additional $2 after one full year. On the other hand, a -2% interest rate means the bank pays the borrower $2 after a year of using the $100 loan, which is a lot to wrap your head around.

While negative interest rates are a great incentive to borrow, it’s hard to understand why anyone would be willing to pay to lend considering the lender is the one taking the risk of a loan default. While seemingly inconceivable, there may be times when central banks run out of policy options to stimulate the economy and turn to the desperate measure of negative interest rates.

Economist Guide: 3 Lessons Karl Marx Teaches Us

By Sean Ross | February 11, 2016

Karl Marx is often associated with such ideas as socialism and communism. It is surprising that so few are familiar with his actual philosophies and theories. Marx’s best-known works are “Capital: A Critique of Political Economy,” more commonly referred to as “Das Kapital,” and “The Communist Manifesto,” co-authored with his lifelong friend Friedrich Engels. He was, without question, one of the most important and revolutionary thinkers of his time.

“Capital,” published in 1867, was by far the more academic work, laying forth Marx’s theories on commodities, labor markets, the division of labor and a basic understanding of the rate of return to owners of capital. Nearly everything Marx wrote was viewed through the lens of the common laborer. From Marx comes the idea that capitalist profits are possible because value is “stolen” from the working class and transferred to the employers.

Marxist ideas have very few direct adherents in contemporary times; indeed, very few Western thinkers embraced Marxism after 1898, when economist Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk’s “Karl Marx and the Close of His System” was first translated into English. In his damning rebuke, Böhm-Bawerk shows that Karl Marx fails to incorporate capital markets or subjective values in his analysis, nullifying most of Marx’s more pronounced conclusions. Still, there are some lessons that even modern economic thinkers can learn from Marx, including the following.

Retirement Savings Rule 2: Plan for Your Future Goals and Needs

Last week, we discussed limiting investment risk in retirement planning. So what are financial planners advising people to invest in? Stocks and bonds are the best known investments and are important to any savings plan. Instruments like savings accounts and certificates of deposit pay a small rate of interest. They carry little risk. Annuities are another savings instrument with low risk. Financial planner Pete D’Arruda says “Worldwide, people can put their money in annuities, which are basically savings accounts offered by insurance companies.” But he says it is important to make a decision about an annuity with a good financial planner. He warns that annuity agreements can be complex, and many bad ones are out there. Pete D’Arruda says good planning means placing money into financial securities and accounts that have different risk levels, using asset allocation. “So true asset allocation is having some in stocks, some in bonds, some in mutual funds, but then some in other places with guaranteed income and then safety and liquidity kind of accounts for emergencies.” This method of savings follows the old saying you should not “put all your eggs in one basket.” But that is not for everyone. Sande Taylor is with the investment company Charles Schwab in south Florida. She advises investors every day. She says many investors have a personal style. There are conservative investors. “A conservative investor by definition typically has eighty percent of their portfolio within fixed income markets and cash.” Even in retirement, Sande Taylor says, some people have their entire financial portfolio, or set of investments, in stocks. They are the aggressive investors. In saving for retirement, there can be a difference between what people believe and what they actually do. In a recent Charles Schwab study, most Americans said they believe it would be easier to save for retirement if they were single. But the study found that eighty-five percent of married people had started saving, while only two thirds of singles had. Sande Taylor says younger people may seek short term goals. “The younger individuals look at it and think, ‘Well retirement is so far away, I’d rather focus on my shorter term goals.” But she says there are big gains to be made by starting early and planning for the future.

Education

Education encompasses both the teaching and learning of knowledge, proper conduct, and technical competency. It thus focuses on the cultivation of skills, trades or professions, as well as mental, moral & aesthetic development.

Formal education consists of systematic instruction, teaching and training by professional teachers. This consists of the application of pedagogy and the development of curricula.

The right to education is a fundamental human right. Since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At world level, the United Nations’ International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13.

Educational systems are established to provide education and training, often for children and the young. A curriculum defines what students should know, understand and be able to do as the result of education. A system of policies, regulations, examinations, structures and funding enables teachers to teach to the best of their abilities. Sometimes educational systems can be used to promote doctrines or ideals as well as knowledge, which is known as social engineering. This can lead to political abuse of the system, particularly in totalitarian states and government.

Primary (or elementary) education consists of the first years of formal, structured education. In general, primary education consists of six or seven years of schooling starting at the age of 5 or 6, although this varies between, and sometimes within, countries. Globally, around 70% of primary-age children are enrolled in primary education, and this proportion is rising.

In most contemporary educational systems of the world, secondary education consists of the second years of formal education that occur during adolescence. It is characterized by transition from the typically compulsory, comprehensive primary education for minors, to the optional, selective tertiary, “post-secondary”, or “higher” education (e.g., university, vocational school) for adults.

Higher education, also called tertiary, third stage, or post secondary education, is the non-compulsory educational level that follows the completion of a school providing a secondary education, such as a high school or secondary school. Tertiary education is normally taken to include undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as vocational education and training. Colleges and universities are the main institutions that provide tertiary education. Collectively, these are sometimes known as tertiary institutions. Tertiary education generally results in the receipt of certificates, diplomas, or academic degrees.

Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character who has become an icon for the Walt Disney Company. Mickey Mouse is short for Mitchell Mouse. It was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and voiced by Walt Disney.

The first appearance of Mickey Mouse was in Plane Crazy on May 15, 1928. But the Walt Disney Company celebrates Mickey Mouse birth as November 18, 1928 upon the release of Steamboat Willie, because it is the first Mickey Mouse Cartoon with sound. The anthropomorphic mouse has developed along the years. He first appeared in color in 1935. The first Technicolor Disney film was Flowers and Trees from 1932. He also evolved from being simply a character in animated cartoons and comic strips to become one of the most recognizable symbols in the world.

Mickey’s popularity has grown around the world. This was due to his angelic nature. Mickey never does anything immoral. However, in 2009 the Walt Disney Company announced that they will begin to re-brand the Mickey Mouse character by moving away from his pleasant, cheerful image and reintroducing the more devious side of his personality, starting with the upcoming Epic Mickey, a Mickey Mouse video game. The Walt Disney Company thus intends to show the mischievous side of Mickey’s personality

The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is a novel that was the last major work of fiction to be written by Ernest Hemingway and published in his lifetime. It is considered to be one of his most famous works and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954.

The Old Man and the Sea is the story of a battle between an old, experienced Cuban fisherman and a large marlin. The novel opens with the explanation that the fisherman, who is named Santiago, has gone 84 days without catching a fish. In fact, he is so unlucky that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with the old man and been ordered to fish with more successful fishermen. Still dedicated to the old man, however, the boy visits Santiago’s shack each night. On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago sets out alone, taking his skiff far onto the Gulf Stream. He sets his lines and, by noon of the first day, a big fish that he is sure is a marlin takes his bait. After a long struggle with the fish Santiago manages to strap the marlin to the side of his skiff and heads home, thinking about the high price the fish will bring him at the market and how many people he will feed. While Santiago sails back to the shore, sharks are attracted to the trail of blood left by the marlin in the water. Despite his efforts to ward off the sharks, they have almost devoured the marlin’s entire carcass, leaving a skeleton consisting mostly of its backbone, its tail and its head. Once home, he slumps onto his bed and falls into a deep sleep. The next day, a group of fishermen gather around the boat where the fish’s skeleton is still attached. Manolin, worried during the old man’s endeavor, cries upon finding him safe asleep. The boy brings him newspapers and coffee. When the old man wakes, they promise to fish together once again. Upon his return to sleep, Santiago dreams of his youth – of lions on an African beach. The old man feels very unwell and also coughs up blood a few times towards the end of the story. He doesn’t tell the boy.

The novel has received so much praise and is considered to be one of the best novels in American literature. Santiago fights the creatures of the sea and some readers think that the story is about man’s battle against the natural world. However, the novel can be viewed as the story of man’s place in relation to nature. In the story, Santiago and the marlin show similar qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal natural law – they must kill or be killed. Santiago himself says:

“man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.”
