Dead pause
War kills more than just people.
It kills opportunity.
Every nation comes into the world not only with weapons, borders, or state institutions. It comes with a song, a word, an image, a temple, a book. It is art that makes a nation unique. It is what gives it a face, a voice, and a memory.
An artist does not create for himself. He conducts a dialogue with future generations. A painting, a book, or music is a letter addressed to people the author will never see. But war tears this letter apart before it is even written.
I often think about the strange injustice of history.
What if Shakespeare had been born amid air raids? What if Michelangelo had died at twenty? What if Leonardo had spent his whole life in a dugout? The world would not know what he had lost. Humanity would not miss Hamlet or Mona Lisa, because they would never have been born.
The greatest loss of humanity is not only what was destroyed. It is what was never born.
We will never see paintings that could change the history of painting. We will never hear music that could become the prayer of an entire generation. We will never read books that could survive centuries. We will never see temples that could testify to the beauty of the human spirit.
And we do not even know the names of those who could have created them.
Perhaps the future Ukrainian Shakespeare was among the dead. Perhaps the new Skovoroda, Lysenko, Parajanov or Bilokur. But war does not leave time for talent to have time to speak.
When an artist dies, more than one person dies with him. A whole universe of possibilities dies with him. An innumerable number of images, melodies, thoughts and meanings that existed only in his soul perish. This is a library that no one has had time to read. This is a museum that no one has had time to open. This is music that the earth will never hear again.
We are used to counting losses in people, cities, and houses.
But there are losses that defy any statistics.
How do you count unwritten books?
How do you measure the silence of an unborn symphony?
How do you evaluate a painting that does not exist only because the artist's hand stopped holding the brush?
After each such death, the world becomes a little smaller.
Because culture is not an adornment of life. It is proof that man was created not only to fight for survival. He was created to create.
And, perhaps, the most terrible crime of war is not only that it takes life.
But that it deprives the future of its beauty.
After that, there remains a dead pause.
A pause in which unwritten books, unpainted icons, unborn symphonies are silent. A pause that no one can fill.
For there is silence that lasts only a moment.
And there is silence that lasts an eternity.
