There’s something I really love about starting with a piece of completely natural leather.

It’s almost like a blank canvas.

I had an idea in my head for this one — a deep, dirty olive. Not perfectly green. Not perfectly brown. Something aged, uneven and full of character.

So I started mixing.

Yellow. Black. A little brown.

And this is probably my favorite part of experimenting with leather: I never know exactly what I’m going to get.

You can measure everything, make notes, repeat the same movements… but leather still has its own opinion.

Some areas absorb more dye. Some stay lighter. Then the oils go in and the color changes again. Wax changes it again.

At one point you think you went too dark.

Then you buff it.

Then the warm tones suddenly come back through.

And eventually there’s this little moment when I look at the piece and think:

Yep. That’s the one.

I could simply order another olive leather from a tannery.

That would definitely be easier.

But making it myself feels different.

There’s experimentation in it. A little uncertainty. A few mistakes. And eventually you end up with a leather that didn’t exist before you started.

For me, that’s a big part of why I still enjoy making things after all these years.

Sometimes the process is just as exciting as the finished wallet.

And damn… I really like how this Olive turned out.

I was able to have this modified to fit my thicker flashlight (Olight S1R ii Baton), my shorter utility knife (Rivery Zero), as well as flip the orientation to better fit in my left, front pocket. This is v4. A complete rebuild — smaller, tighter, four dedicated slots: knife, flashlight, pen, prybar. Nothing rattles because nothing’s guessing anymore.

The build order is brutal — 4 stages, each one has to be right before the next starts, no going back once you’re in it. That’s why this one took so long.

One more beautiful Boatswain v3 made from Van Gogh leather by Conceria Il Ponte (Tuscany, Italy) in color Caramel — a warm golden-brown with a smooth, bright aniline finish. Hand-stamped with matte gold foil, stitched with Camel linen thread.

This Boatswain v3 is made from Van Gogh leather by Conceria Il Ponte (Tuscany, Italy) in color Caramel — a warm golden-brown with a smooth, bright aniline finish that catches light directly. Hand-stamped with bright gold foil, stitched with golden linen thread. The foil and thread together make it the most eye-catching piece in this batch.

Van Gogh is Conceria Il Ponte’s Tamponato leather — the most authentic leather produced in Tuscany, by their own description. French bovine shoulders, 100% vegetable-tanned with Quebracho and Mimosa extracts following an old tannery recipe. The hide is finished by hand then sprayed with aniline colors, giving it a smooth, shiny surface with transparency and natural depth. Not dyed through: the finish is applied on top of natural leather, which is exactly what allows that warm Caramel tone to catch light the way it does.
