Chernobyl - 1986

Chernobyl - 1986 April 26, 1986 is not just a date on the calendar. A. Kurkin, The Burden of The Peaceful Atom
(2)

“...April 26, 1986 is not just a date on the calendar, it is a symbol of events filled with the deepest meaning, the meaning of which each subsequent generation will discover again. And as our society changes, as it becomes aware and aware of itself, its history and key moments in its development, it will necessarily return in memory to Chernobyl...”

HELPERS BECOME VICTIMS

Goiânia, November 1987. The heroes: They cleaned the city of radioactive waste.

More than 700 aid workers, technicians, bricklayers, truck drivers, firefighters, police officers, and soldiers were deployed to secure and clean the contaminated sites. Some subsequently became ill. Many therefore also consider themselves victims of cesium.

During the cleanup operations, the radiation levels were sometimes so high that they exceeded the measuring scale of the Geiger counters and constantly triggered alarms. The radiation technicians therefore had to continuously deregulate the measuring devices and deactivate the alarms. Suzane de Alencar Vieira, State University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

At the time of the accident, João was working as a driver, transporting radioactive waste out of the city. His two brothers, Aparecido and Bento, were clearing away radioactive construction debris. His mother was washing her children's work overalls. None of them have been officially recognized as victims. Correio Braziliense, September 8, 2017

German radiation expert Dr. Winfried Koelzer from the Karlsruhe Research Center was on-site in Goiânia as a consultant. He suggested using robots in some areas due to the high levels of radiation, in order to prevent workers from being exposed to radiation.

Heavy rainfall had also driven cesium particles more than 30 centimeters into the ground, which therefore also had to be removed. New York Times, October 29, 1987
