The Green Card Lottery, officially known as the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, is a program run by the U.S. government that provides a pathway for individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States to obtain a U.S. permanent resident card, or "Green Card." This allows winners to live and work in the U.S. as permanent residents.
Each year, approximately 50,000 Green Cards are made available through the lottery. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements, such as having at least a high school education or two years of work experience in a qualifying occupation. The lottery is free to enter, and winners are selected randomly.
