Formation Process
1. Volcanic Activity: Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano, which means it was built up by layers of lava, ash, and volcanic rock. Its formation began around 1 million years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch.
2. Three Cones: The mountain consists of three volcanic cones:
Kibo: The highest cone, which last erupted in 1840. It contains the summit, Uhuru Peak.
Mawenzi: The second-highest cone, known for its rugged peaks and spires, is much older and is believed to have formed before Kibo.
Shira: The oldest of the three, Shira has eroded significantly over time and is now a plateau.
3. Erosion and Glaciation: Over time, Kilimanjaro has been shaped by erosion and glaciation. During the last ice age, glaciers covered the mountain, carving its distinctive features. The glaciers continue to shrink today due to climate change.
