Hello, dear Stranger.
The past year has been a challenging one. For all of us.
As the world entered an era of uncertainty, The Common remained hopeful that this crisis would soon pass.
However, optimism is rarely enough to overcome all of life’s unforeseen challenges. It comes with great sadness to announce that The Common’s doors are unable to reopen after Taipei’s lockdown measures have eased.
Some of you may be old enough to remember The Common when it first opened its doors back in 2015. There was no menu at that time, just an open kitchen with a ‘honesty payment’ system and a simple goal: to create a hidden ‘home away from home’ in the heart of the city.
Over these six long years, The Common has welcomed tens of thousands of strangers to this home away from home. Many of you may remember The Common as a peaceful place to study, read a book or write a ‘hello stranger’ postcard. Others probably remember here as place to catch-up with old friends, attend interesting events or perhaps host a BBQ on the rooftop. Of course, we’ve seen many couples came here on dates, some to just share a pizza, a few even organising marriage proposals. Whoever you are, we hope you all can take some precious memories from The Common.
Through each handwritten order of coffee, freshly baked scone and iced lemon tea, thank you. It’s been an honour for The Common team to get to know you.
We will miss you all and, who knows, maybe we will meet again one day.
If you would like to share a memory of The Common, please leave a comment below.
Goodbye (for now), dear stranger.
The Common team.
