Kanna Takase (born in Osaka in 1994) completed her MFA in Painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts, in 2020 and is currently based in Kyoto. In 2024, she received the Grand Prize at the Kyoto Prefectural Emerging Artists Exhibition and presented a major solo exhibition at the Annex Hall of the Kyoto Cultural Museum.

Takase habitually records people, events, and observations from her daily life in written notes, using these fragments of language as the starting point for her paintings. Her work often begins with human relationships, exploring the emotions and distances that arise between individuals—barriers, frustration, sorrow, pain, and the deeply private feelings that remain impossible to fully understand or reveal.

She frequently employs animals, plants, and everyday objects as symbolic substitutes, transforming subjects rooted in anxiety and negative emotions into images that are vivid, playful, and at times almost childlike. Through this approach, she creates a subtle tension between cuteness and danger, humor and pain, constructing narrative worlds that feel unsettling yet irresistibly inviting.

The claws and fangs that often appear in her paintings symbolize the potential for people to hurt one another, while the fur that covers bodies serves as a metaphor for self-protection. Emotions that cannot be spoken directly are ultimately entrusted to the expressions and gestures of animals, becoming Takase’s distinctive and perceptive visual language of human feeling.

June 5 — July 11, 2026
Opening June 5, 2026 4-7 pm

When TAKASE Kanna’s brush meets a candle on canvas, the flame does not burn quietly. It swells into a tiger’s face, all fury and fangs, heat pressing forward, with a single tear caught at the corner of its eye. On the beach, a claw has traced a heart in the sand while the tide waits at the painting’s edge, unhurried, inevitable, ready to take the heart away and leave only scattered shells. A horse in the sand strains forward and glances back, knowing, perhaps, that no amount of speed outruns the pull of the moon. “Feelings” work the same way: they swell and subside, pressing toward release, or simply wearing themselves smooth. In her Taipei debut, Still Soft, Still Sharp, Japanese artist TAKASE Kanna fills Hiro Hiro Art Space with over twenty paintings and ceramic works, opening a habitat for feeling where tigers, horses, bats, and turtles each carry something they can’t quite put down. The exhibition runs June 5 to July 11, 2026.

《Two Generations of Wind》

Sofu Teshigahara was known for incorporating iron vessels into his ikebana practice, while the third-generation iemoto, Hiroshi Teshigahara, became renowned for his bamboo-based creations. This large-scale installation brings together the distinctive characteristics of these two generations, combining iron and bamboo to express the Sogetsu School’s spirit of innovation and its continual exploration beyond the conventional boundaries of materials.

Liang Han-Yun was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and draws primary inspiration from the natural world. She majored in English before pursuing graduate studies in the Visual Arts program of the Institute of Applied Arts at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. During her studies, she participated in academic exchanges in New York and Helsinki, where she began exploring ceramics and three-dimensional materials. After graduation, while working in design, she continued to develop her personal artistic practice, gradually forming a ceramic language that integrates elements of nature.
In 2017, she moved to Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku, Japan, to study under ceramic artist Teppei Ono, dedicating herself to ceramic practice. Following her first solo exhibition in Osaka in 2020, she continued to exhibit across Japan. In 2021, she was awarded a grant by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture to undertake a residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. After returning to Taiwan in 2022, she continued her practice and exhibitions, receiving the Tainan New Art Award the same year and being shortlisted for the 2025 Kaohsiung Award in the Spatial Arts category.
