“Beige is the color of my skin as an Asian person. The beige frame is like skin—a boundary between the outside world and the body.”
For Chen Shiau-Peng, Minimalism is not a fixed aesthetic, but a language that still holds possibilities to be explored. Her recurring beige frame is both neutral and bodily: the color of her own skin, connecting seemingly neutral abstraction to a physical presence.
Influenced by David Batchelor’s discussion of “framing,” Chen also uses the frame to question how artistic value is defined and by whom.
Since 2007, Chen has connected her work directly to the places she lives and moves through. For her, localization does not require specific materials or cultural symbols—it can take place within the concept itself.
