✹ THE SCENES ✹

The special contemporary video focus exhibition, Art Intelligence, officially opens this afternoon at Tokyo Gendai.

Born in Taipei in 1974 and a graduate of the National Institute of the Arts (now TNUA), artist Tsui Kuang-Yu has long been active on international stages such as the Venice Biennale. Operating within the conceptual framework of "biological adaptation and evolution," Tsui transforms his body into an experimental vehicle to intervene in social systems, confronting collective myths through absurd physical practices.

In his iconic series Studies for Contemporary Life, Tsui turns his critical lens toward the urban landscape woven from consumerism and digital smoothscapes. As daily life becomes domesticated into media simulation—with routines "performed" across screens and storefronts—authentic experience grows as elusive as an onion peeled down to a hollow core. By transforming convenience stores and live-streaming channels into behavioral laboratories, he deconstructs an existence saturated by big data, re-summoning the prophetic power of individual perception.

✹ EXHIBITION ON VIEW ✹

In this exhibition, artist Chang San Hsueh expands his plant "portraits" with multi-panel vertical compositions that capture the dynamic forms of ferns.

Breaking from traditional conventions that relegate plants to the background, he elevates them to central protagonists using rich, layered pigments. Another highlight is the Datun Volcano Group series, a triptych capturing mountain landscapes from dawn to dusk.

✹ EXHIBITION ON VIEW ✹

In the OBJECT OF COLLECTION series, artist de Alvear presents the idea that "all children start collecting colored stones... we are hoarders," echoes the poet and critic Susan Stewart's observation that the essence of the collection is the replacement of time and history with spatial classification. By hoarding and controlling objects, humanity constructs a hermetic universe within a private space that can be completely mastered. This longing to internalize the external world is also de Alvear's profound interpretation of "objects of desire."

How does desire permeate the entirety of our existence? The yearning for material possession, the longing for nostalgia, the compulsion to interrogate the primordial genesis of all things... Much as we perpetually gaze up at the axis of time, every act of collecting unfurls as a new inception.

✹ EXHIBITION’s INFORMATION ✹

From September 11 to 13, Double Gallery, Chi-Wen Gallery, and Project Fulfill Art Space are jointly invited to participate in Tokyo Gendai 2026, presenting the contemporary video focus exhibition Art Intelligence in the special Tane (Seed) sector. Juxtaposing artificial intelligence with artistic intelligence, the exhibition employs cross-media vocabularies to confront the collective mythologies of contemporary digital torrents and smooth landscapes, seeking to reclaim the complex layers and subtle emotions of human experience within the fissures elusive to algorithms.
Interwoven by consumerism and the smooth landscapes of the digital, everyday life has long been domesticated into an endless simulation of media. As we "perform the everyday" through screens and shop windows, acting out the imaginations bestowed by others, authentic experience becomes as ambiguous and elusive as an onion whose layers yield only another eggshell. Through artist Tsui Kuang-Yu’s series Exercise Living, he intervenes in these familiar urban sites, turning convenience stores, storefronts, and streaming channels into absurd arenas for behavioral experiments. Confronting big data and collective mythologies alike, he summons back the prophetic power of autonomous perception within an era cluttered with self-proclaimed prophets.

Contemporary life has quietly been reshaped by algorithms and media, leaving us to repeatedly rehearse collective imaginations between storefront windows and screens, where even the perception of reality gradually bleeds into simulation. Tsui Kuang-Yu’s series Exercise Living pushes this exact condition to its extreme as a behavioral experiment. By physically intervening in everyday sites such as convenience stores and street corners, he lays bare the inherent absurdity of consumer society within the ambiguous fissures of the virtual and the real. Rather than offering answers, the work coolly casts a critical inquiry toward the concept of reality in an era saturated with self-proclaimed prophets.

✹ ARTIST’S INFORMATION ✹

Chang San-Hsueh (b. 1984, Taipei, Taiwan) holds a B.F.A. from Taipei National University of the Arts and currently lives and works in Taipei.

His accolades include winning Next Art Tainan 2023 and receiving an Honorable Mention at the Kaohsiung Award 2018. His work is included in the collection of the Taiwan Art Bank. Balancing precise depiction with expressive brushwork, Chang explores humanistic identity through nature and has exhibited widely across Taiwan and Japan.

In this exhibition, Chang expands his plant "portraits" with multi-panel vertical compositions that capture the dynamic forms of ferns. Breaking from traditional conventions that relegate plants to the background, he elevates them to central protagonists using rich, layered pigments. Another highlight is the Datun Volcano Group series, a triptych capturing mountain landscapes from dawn to dusk. By employing stark white backgrounds, Chang simultaneously echoes the “liubai” (negative space) aesthetic of traditional ink painting and simulates light filtering through leaves, capturing the subtle variations observed in his daily plant care.

✹ THE SCENES ✹

Today’s artist talk for《Shelter Island》has successfully concluded. We extend our deepest gratitude to the artist, our guest speakers, and everyone who joined us in excavating the profound meanings of coexistence, symbiosis, and mutual reliance embedded within this land.
We are especially thankful to speakers Kuo Chen-Meng and Hsieh I-Yi for their profound deconstruction of fern ecology and its intricate ties to the land, humanity, and art. Their insights illuminated the narrative sentiments behind artist Chang San Hsueh’s works and their resonant connection to the tactile memories of Taiwan's local ethos.

《Shelter Island》 remains on view through September 26. We warmly invite you to step into Double Square and experience the profound narratives woven into this exhibition.
