BLOCK FOUR:The Pool of the Inner City|

For Wai Lap Chan, the swimming pool is more than a place for leisure and exercise. When strangers who have never met before find themselves exposed and vulnerable in one another’s presence, the pool becomes an ambiguous and subtle space where power dynamics unfold and the boundaries between public and private become blurred.

Among these references, swimming-pool scenes in film are particularly emblematic. The works in this exhibition draw inspiration from the pool scenes in “Sexy Beast”(2001) and “Tick, Tick... BOOM!”(2021), evoking the calm before the moment of violence and the pool as an escape from reality. Chan deliberately removes the figures from his compositions, allowing viewers to immerse themselves more fully in the play of light and water that defines his paintings. In his large-scale works, he expands upon her imagination of these cinematic pools: layers of finely rendered blue tiles draw the eye inward, gradually dissolving into the depths of the water.

Creating a Glow|LighTemp

In this show, “glow” is central to how the exhibition is experienced. RIVER ART GALLERY has collaborated with lighting designer Lan (Hsin-Yi Liu), founder of LighTemp, for many years. She began working independently in lighting in 2018 and established LighTemp in 2024. Her practice spans lighting design and technical ex*****on for exhibitions, artworks, and spatial environments, with projects across major museums, galleries, and art spaces throughout Taiwan.

For Lan, space carries fragments of memory across time, while light has the capacity to awaken meaningful moments within those who inhabit it. By attuning closely to emotion and translating it into precise physical and technical decisions, she creates conditions in which new memories can emerge. This sensitivity to the “temperature of light” is woven into the exhibition’s curatorial narrative. In her hands, light does more than evenly illuminate objects; it modulates the pace of looking, spatial distance, and bodily perception. The dual quality embedded in “glow” is rendered perceptible through subtle shifts of light: lamps dissolving into mist, reflections after rain, the lingering afterglow of urban neon, and even the blue light of a screen cast across a sleepless face.

What we come to visit has never truly disappeared. By slowing our pace and allowing the body to linger in stillness—unfolding alongside the vital glow and abundant ferns—we may begin to notice a faint light within ourselves gradually coming into view.

BLOCK THREE : The Cosmic Tideland|

正如《Don't Let Light Go Out of The Eye》翼板上的黃銅星星,守護你我眼中,那道永不熄滅的希望之光。

Hilarie Hon’s place of retreat occupies an intertidal zone between the cosmos and the forest. Shifting reflections of light transform the external world from mere landscape into a medium for the psyche's inner pulse, inviting sustained contemplation of one’s state of being across time and memory.

“A Way of Flying” unfolds as a triptych housed within a wooden box. Its deliberately restrained exterior contrasts with the intricate world within, allowing the work to move beyond the conventional viewing framework of the white cube and establish a self-contained, sheltering psychological space. Inspired by the writings of astronomer Carl Sagan, Hon brings a rational gaze toward the vastness of the universe into dialogue with intimate states of inner experience. The tiles on the side panels are hand-shaped and fired by the artist, drawing on Francisco Goya’s “Proverbios” series and its imagery of human flight to evoke a will that exceeds the weight of reality: the capacity to look upward and imagine a future even amid constraint, burden, and adversity. Like the brass stars on the panels of “Don't Let Light Go Out of The Eye,” they safeguard the light of hope that endures within us.

BLOCK TWO:The Fountain of Long Afternoons|

Ngai Wing Lam’s work is inspired by her childhood experiences and memories of dreams. Her works evolve around a transhistorical connection between the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens and Siu Fa, a leopard. Established in 1871, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens is the oldest park in Hong Kong, while its design and geographical location reflect the colonial urban planning of the nineteenth century. Siu Fa, meanwhile, was gifted to Hong Kong by West Berlin in 1989 and spent her entire life confined within an iron cage in the Gardens.

In Ngai’s paintings, Siu Fa is freed from captivity, wandering through scenes of the park’s fountains from the 1860s and 1930s. The koi-head figures playing alongside her embody both the artist’s personal memories and Hong Kong’s collective memory. Through an exceptionally gentle gesture, the works liberate this history, opening a secluded space for rest and retreat.

BLOCK ONE:The Golden Thicket|

Xinran Liu’s work endeavors to capture the unfiltered thoughts and memories that surface in an instant. In her new series, she experiments with parchment, whose smooth surface allows her light and quick brushstrokes to be preserved with greater clarity. Her palette is inspired by El Greco, while memories of hiking near Horsey Gap in England are woven into the works. Lemon yellow and saturated orange, combined with entangled brushstrokes, create an peculiar landscape reminiscent of flames burning against the darkness of night.

The large-scale linen works continue this series, but turn instead to the theme of sunlight. Here, sweeping brushstrokes overlap in layers of golden yellow, while beams and patches of light pe*****te the objects, evoking a vivid visual memory that is dazzling and intense. Despite their blazing warmth and unified palette, the works also convey a profound sense of stillness and tranquility.

《Into the Fern Glow

“Into the Fern Glow” will remain on view until October 3. The exhibition seeks to reveal an “offline condition” particular to East Asia’s humid civilization, the mutual high-humidity climate shared by the seven artists, shapes a perceptual experience suspended between lucidity and reverie. We sincerely invite viewers to enter this “Fern Glow Forest”, awaken the potential power of dreams.

Installation Shots |Into th Fern Glow

Rather than beginning directly with geography or identity, the exhibition turns toward a more nuanced curatorial approach: climate. The artists’ “primordial forests” are marked by forms of humidity long absorbed into the body, urban memory, and culture: mountain mist and island moisture, basin fog, condensation seasons, and prolonged rains. Together, these conditions shape a perceptual experience suspended between lucidity and reverie. Here, humidity becomes a condition of being. It concerns how scent recalls memory, how the skin senses its environment, how mist alters the act of looking, and even how emotions, dreams, and collective consciousness gradually take form.

The second floor begins with Wai Lap Chan’s unpeopled cinematic poolscape, charged with ambiguous moisture, and Cheng Yen Yu’s valley of natural fractals, built through layered acts of sedimentation. After crossing the atrium corridor, viewers encounter Liao Wen’s liminal body emerging from a ruined architectural structure. Finally, in Hsiao-Ai Wang’s inner garden of dreams—where the boundaries between illusion and reality are carefully discerned—one is powerfully “kicked” back into the world we inhabit, carrying renewed energy and lucid awareness. As the real and the virtual, technology and nature have already permeated one another, we may need to relinquish control and relearn how to trust our unnamed instincts. We warmly invite everyone to accept the possibility of getting lost and to awaken the potential of dreams within this “Fern Glow Forest.”

Installation Shots |

Extending its reflection on technological overload and spiritual retreat, the exhibition further asks: in an age increasingly saturated by technology and information, can we still consciously withdraw into deeper states of being and recover genuine intuition and perception?

This show incorporates the gallery’s own architectural features—the atrium, freight elevator, and axial corridor—into a state shaped by the interplay of light and heat, humidity and bodily sensation, urban memory and the unconscious. These spatial elements are transformed into a spiritual forest composed of distinct perceptual zones. Viewers move through ecologies of different gravities and layers, falling into the dream blocks of seven artists. The journey begins with the searing radiance of Xinran Liu’s sunlit visions; continues beneath the atrium, where one strolls with “Siu Fa” through Ngai Wing Lam’s tenderly reimagined Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens; and then descends into Hilarie Hon’s psychic darkroom, a space that seems to drift through the cosmos.

Along the way, people will notice the recurring presence of ferns, accompanied by subtle glimmers of light. Here, “Fern” refers to pteridophytes, while quietly preserving the trace of the exhibition’s original “electric sheep” motif. Low-growing, ancient, and silently spreading through mountain mist and rain, the fern becomes a primordial symbol of what continues to unfold deep within the human body after relentless acceleration.

About Ngai Wing Lam and Hilarie Hon |

Ngai Wing Lam, born in Hong Kong in 1986, explores relationships, identity, and ambiguity through distinctive humanoid figures paired with koi. Their silent, inscrutable faces conceal inner emotions while reflecting the fear of difference, rejection, and complex human connections. Set against Hong Kong's urban landscapes, Ngai's paintings balance reality and fantasy. Shifting between dreamlike and everyday narratives, her work examines personal experience and social conditions, inviting viewers into stories that are simultaneously alienating and intimate.

Also from Hong Kong, Hilarie Hon uses a deeply introspective visual language to depict surreal scenes where the external world reflects her interior landscape. Raised by the coast, she incorporates shifting light, fluid rhythms, and wave-like movements into her compositions. Moving beyond conventional landscape painting, her works evoke fleeting beauty and quiet contemplation on time, memory, and existence. For Hon, art is a prolonged immersion between reality and the subconscious—a translucent vessel that quietly holds the most ineffable traces of existence amid shifting currents.
