Lu MiaoYing
Keep It Clean, Keep It Clean: Smells like Summer, Keep It Clean:

One image has stayed with me for years: after a floor is scrubbed clean, flowers begin to bloom from its surface.

Vintage cleaning product advertisements recur the same scenes: smiling housewives, spotless floors, and cheerful music. Cleaning is presented as something effortless, even joyful. It is a promise of happiness embedded in everyday life.

This work begins with those images and brings together screen-printed ceramic tiles, cleaning tools, plants, and text. It is an attempt to think about cleaning not only as a practical act of maintaining a space, but also as an experiment in the many imaginations, desires, and associations that gather around it.

Lu ChihKai

Tidying up often evokes memory, becoming a certain kind of energy in the formation of imagination. Beginning with actions such as playing, unfolding, sealing, and packing, this body of work explores the symbolic meanings embedded in processes of organization and tidying. Some of these objects come from what has been left behind in storage, while others belong to functional contexts of moving, packaging, and protection. In the exhibition space, they are rearranged, observed, and activated, taking on states different from their original uses. The work attempts to reverse the established logic of these objects, allowing seemingly ordinary, auxiliary, or temporary things to gradually reveal the time, memory, and tension that exist beyond their surfaces.

Tidy Up, Tidy Down

Cheng FangYi presents Present Space, a series of video installations dispersed throughout the exhibition site. Responding to the spatial conditions of each installation location, an AI system extracts corresponding spatial fragments from a moving-image database and presents them on-site. Drawing from YAO’s architectural characteristics, the work occupies four distinct spaces: a living room, an interior corridor, a bathroom sink, and a balcony framed by large windows.

As viewers move through the exhibition, the spaces depicted on screen begin to overlap and resonate with the spaces their bodies physically inhabit. The temporal and spatial dimensions of the moving image extend beyond the flat surface of the screen into the surrounding environment. Through its multi-channel, site-specific configuration, Present Space shifts the image away from being a representation of an elsewhere, allowing it to be experienced as something unfolding alongside the viewer’s present surroundings.

Present Space reflects on how the body might renegotiate its relationship to space when moving images become embedded within the environment rather than remaining objects of detached observation.

Tidy Up, Tidy Down

Recalling a few ordinary and private moments — coming across a box of collected items in the garage, unsure whether it should have been thrown away or where it belongs; or watching a studio desk gradually become cluttered, yet hesitating to tidy it all at once. When these suspended feelings gather together, what kind of space might they form?

Cheng FangYi , Lu MiaoYing , and Lu ChihKai began from different materials and concerns, approaching “tidying” as an artistic practice. For them, creation involved accumulating while simultaneously letting go, and through this repetition, attempting to maintain a sense of balance.

The works presented in Tidy Up, Tidy Down emerge from their process of collecting images and objects. These imported fragments once belonged to another time and space, carrying a sense of distance and an untraceable origin. Here, the artists’ memories and those of the viewers are laid out and begin to extend from their points of overlap. While things remain unorganized, the act of “tidying” continues — taken up by each visitor as they move among the artworks.

The white dog was named Bai; amidst the thickets and mire of the tropical heat, the hue of his fur was remarkably stark. In the long stretch of the day, Bai liked to gaze at the tropical fish within the pool, to dig for earthworms hidden in the mounds of soil, and to use his short ears to hear the sound of night moths beating their wings.

During the season of the fruit harvest, the air was saturated with scents sweet, decaying, and fermented; at this time, Bai would often eat sparingly and sleep briefly, and he would dream many dreams. Once, he dreamed of a gargantuan mother dog resting beneath a deep blue sky; when Bai drew near her, he smelled the fragrance of fur and milk, and heard the sounds of other fetuses within the mother dog’s belly.

Bai could scent his own death, and later, his eyes slowly turned white, becoming such that he could only see himself. Bai was finally buried beneath the lychee tree, together with his brothers and sisters who came before him. In the year following a dog’s burial, the lychee tree would produce but a few flowers, yet the fruits that remained at the end were each great and succulent.

然而,we live as if we are immortal。🕳

更非什麼神秘的力量在驅使;

In dreams, I die again and again—
no beginning, no end.
Time loses its function—
unhinged, reversed.
Swept into it, unable to break free,
I hold my breath—
I walk through the winding back alleys between buildings,
stepping on the water stains left by the storm on the ground.
I quicken my pace—
not out of fear, urgency, or excitement,
not to chase, nor to escape,
nor driven by any mysterious force;
It’s just that I’ve long grown numb
to waiting.
The memory of you is so murky—
a collage of shattered fragments.
As if I hear your familiar voice
whispering in my ear—
a word never spoken.
I wake up again—
touching the crease left by the dream,
a feeling beyond words.
That hollow is at once heavy and empty,
even suffocating.
The traces cannot be smoothed away.
In dreams, I live again—
Yet having long forgotten how to breathe.

然而,we live as if we are immortal。🕳

I once beheld an orchard, like a boat, like a scallop, like a ripened fruit, like a bowl for feeding beasts, like a pond, like hollowed bones, like a temple of the gods, like a glass lamp, like a snail’s shell, like burning firecrackers.

In the beginning, what I first noticed was the wall. Because without a wall, the life within the garden would grow wantonly without limit; life would become endless, and thus there would be no birth, and no death.

Then, I saw the soil. It was basket upon basket of vast earth, and the air was filled with a primordial scent; crystalline, pulsing particles surged in the air, ready to nourish all living things.

In the corner of the orchard, there was a shallow pond. The southern light pierced the body of water, binding the richness of the soil, reflecting luminous patterns upon the surface of tropical fish, while the water weeds at the bottom drifted slowly with the current.

Above the water weeds, a cluster of ripened fruit hung upon the branches. As one fruit after another gradually manifested, different kinds of fruit trees appeared one by one in the garden; their pistils and stamens stained one another, while at the ends of the treetops bloomed untimely flowers.

In the night, a white dog entered the orchard with light, rhythmic steps. His paws made a damp and pleasant sound upon the soil strewn with branches; through scent, he knew which animals were preparing to wake, and which plants were stepping into a long, deep sleep.
