(Soundboard Grain Density & Acoustic Calibration)
Andrea
"For me, the grain width of spruce is never an absolute indicator of quality, but rather a sign of the mechanical behavior of the wood itself. A narrow-grained top generally offers higher density and longitudinal stiffness, while a wider grain can provide greater elasticity and quicker response. The role of the luthier is to create balance."

"With narrow-grained spruce, I often work by slightly reducing thickness in selected areas and making the arching more fluid, in order to avoid a sound that becomes too rigid or closed. With wider grain, on the other hand, I carefully control the structural stiffness through thickness distribution and bass bar adjustment, so as to preserve depth, projection, and tonal stability."
"I do not follow fixed formulas: every piece of wood requires its own individual approach. I study the elastic response, listen carefully to the tap tone, evaluate the specific weight, and allow the material itself to guide the final direction of the instrument. Ultimately, the true goal is not to compensate for the wood, but to release its maximum acoustic potential."
(Quality Assessment & Installation of the Bridge)
Andrea
"The bridge is the heart of the instrument’s acoustic transmission. Even an exceptional instrument can lose a significant part of its voice if the bridge is mediocre or improperly fitted. For material selection, I look for perfectly quarter-cut maple with balanced density, natural elasticity, and regular grain structure. A fine bridge must be light yet strong, capable of transmitting energy without dispersing it."

"The medullary rays are extremely important: when they are well defined, they generally indicate correct cutting orientation and good structural stability. The grain orientation also directly affects the speed and quality of sound transmission."
"Fitting is an extremely delicate process. The bridge feet must adhere perfectly to the top plate without any tension or invisible gaps. In addition, the thickness, height, flexibility, and final cut must all be calibrated according to the individual character of the instrument and the needs of the musician. A great bridge should not simply 'work' — it must allow the instrument to breathe."
(Wood Selection for Tops and Backs)
Andrea
"The selection of tonewood is probably the most spiritual moment in the art of lutherie. It is very important to use very seasoned wood at least 12/15 years, in my violins I use over 40/60 years old."
"For the top plate, I seek spruce that combines lightness, elasticity, and stiffness in perfect balance. The tap tone must be clear, deep, and rich in harmonics. I carefully observe the regularity of the grain growth, the perfectly radial cut, and the quality of the natural aging process."
"For the maple back, I look for structural stability, reflective capability, and aesthetic beauty — but never at the expense of acoustic function. Spectacular flame can be visually fascinating, yet it should never compromise the tonal response of the wood."
"Over the years, I have learned that great instruments are born when technique and emotion meet. Certain pieces of wood immediately transmit a special feeling even before being worked. It is a combination of density, vibration, response speed, and the natural character of the material. A violin maker does not create sound from nothing — his task is to recognize the hidden voice within the wood and bring it to life."
