You might be asking, what are the squiggly lines on the side of the house? The walls of the house are comprised of bricks, base layer cement, outer layer cement (which are the squiggly lines) and a finishing layer such as washed terrazzo (small pebbles covering the surface of the walls). The squiggly lines on the top layer of cement is just so the terrazzo will stick firmly to the wall.

The first two floors of this house was built around 1927, the third floor was then finished after WW2 between 1945-1956. My guess is they had plans to finish the outer walls with terrazzo but never finished it. It was only about 20 years ago when my parents decided to add it the first floor. So now, the construction company needs to tap and see which part of the walls is damaged and restoring it back to the layer with the squiggly lines.

As a happy accident, I was also drawing squiggly lines on my mugs, not intentionally referencing the squiggly lines on the walls but it all worked out! For now, this has been a fun style to work on.

Fun fact, there are two cat prints on the last two picture of the slides. They said the cement needs to be dry enough of the prints to hold and wet enough to create the imprint, which gives it a short window of time for these prints to be created. The mystery of why there are only two paw prints is still up for debate.

This is where the “sun” logo came from. This house was built in 1927 and my great grandfather had this logo inscribed onto the front of the house. There was an architect that said it could be like the Chrysanthemum of the Japanese imperial seal. But back then, there used to be a light fixture above it, with the lightbulb directly at the center of the flower. Meaning that this might not be a Chrysanthemum, but a sun. If anyone had any theories as to what this might be or if this could be our family crest, let me know! Thanks!

This photo is from July 22, 1956, celebration my great grandfather’s birthday

What a cute couple, and , selling pottery out here on a friday afternoon. Lil Brick makes these little cups of different faces and Lil Stone makes these adorable little monsters (kinda reminds me of crazy bones.) Together as a ceramist and chef, they created a shop called . This is where they would plate a delicious meal on some local handmade pottery and also teach pottery on the side. Talk about the best collaboration between two passion driven artists. It’s filled with food for sustenance and laughter amongst friends. I believe wherever they go next, they would bring this level of positive energy to the people around them! It was great meeting you two! 加油!

If I could describe 易伯 (Yi Po) with one word, it would be curious. He loves exploring different styles and cups yet keeping one or two elements constant: either his rectangular handles or his circle/ square motifs. This particular cup I have is from his solo show “Muttering in the dark,” which was a set of 48 different cups of different shades of black on a black shelf. His original idea was to sell the whole set to one buyer but opted out to selling each one individually. He also recreates this style of pottery but in full color. The reason why I described him as curious is he’s never stops learning. From trying out different styles to experimenting with local Tainan clay. Go and check out his other works! 謝謝你跟我們聊那麼久!

My favorite part to this mug is that it looks like a flower. The way he sculpts this piece looks so effortless. From the flower petal lip of the cup down to the curves of the foot. I chose this cup because of the red accent in the crackled glaze, which gives it more of a flower vibe, almost like it’s changing colors throughout the season. This celadon glaze fits the cup so well because where the glaze pools and breaks accentuates the lines so much more. Last but not least, the handle. The handle has an elegant curve to it, accompanied by two finger rest, top and bottom, the perfect place to rest your thumb and middle finger. This one finger handle is quite comfortable to use, which makes a great drinking experience. Go check out his other work because you’ll be surprised how his style changes and morphs on different types of pottery.

I’ve been holding back on making a coffee pour over because i wasn’t confident in making it. But after a couple of tries, it’s been pretty fun. I’ve just been trying to stay consistent with the shape and making it thinner so it’s not too heavy to use.

This super funky, pop-arty cup is definitely an eye catcher. The body of the cup is orange porcelain with blue dots while the handle is blue porcelain with orange dots. Together, they look like the same color but its not. Though a couple of my family members find it quite odd, but I on the other hand really quite like it. The dots on the cup are quite fun to brush your fingers against when you’re not drinking out of it. The handle is quite comfortable to use inspite the dots. I think all handmade mugs are created for a fun and unique experience and this one definitely is one of my more unique cups out of my collection. Super cool to see the new direction Chris takes his art with all the glaze drips!

Something new’s a-brewing. I’ve been holding off on it because it seemed difficult since you learn about heat displacement when brewing, which reduces extraction of the grounds but we’ll see. It’s been pretty fun making these so far.
