Both the wise Silenus and the Buddha revealed a shared truth: the essence of life is suffering. In my youth, I couldn’t grasp this. Yet, through years of daily dialogues with needles, skin, and blood, I have learned to stand before the bleakness of life—shivering, yet admiring it. Gongbi’s multi-layered washes of tattooing do precisely this: layering ink and poetry over suffering, one stroke at a time, trading time for redemption.
This "Red Mountain Flower" was designed to gracefully conceal Xiaomin’s surgical scar. The fluid posture of the flower flows with her movements, catching the eye as it occasionally appears to bloom upward. To my surprise, Xiaomin later revealed she is extremely sensitive to pain. Yet throughout the session, her breathing remained steady and her expression serene. That composure reminded me of life's pivotal "breakthroughs"—like a baby’s first roll, a major exam, a first heartbreak, or conquering one’s first mountain peak. Breakthroughs are often painful, yet they are what make life profound.
Now healed, Xiaomin happily shared that her tattoo has received endless compliments. What touches me most is that this is the sweet fruit of her overcoming both physical and emotional pain. It is an honor to have accompanied her in co-creating this red flower. Between the needle and the skin, we truly transformed pain into beauty.
