"the architect of impossible physics"
This is a section, about five or six inches square, from the larger original, now completed and in storage.
This series began back in the late 1980's, one expanded thought which was allowed to go delightfully haywire, back then I perceived this series as an opportunity to really go beyond and test my own comfort zones about art, and the making of "art".
A drawing, the simple action of a pencil on paper has held my attention because of its virtual and economic possibility, the two elements prior to our digital technological revolution was the most common material association perhaps among all modern cultures, gestures on paper have changed lives, fortunes, countries, determined life or death, the gesture itself held sacrosanct, binding, legitimate and authorized. The processes of civilization may hand us a printed form, but we still gotta fu***ng sign it, or put our individual print DNA map on a piece of paper, however this too might soon become history.
The drawing captures the moment between thought and fact, a sequence which might have been predetermined even before the action committed a marking to surface, a scratch in the dirt, some mark chiselled on a rock, signage and symbol, raw data. In drawing there is no machine to turn on or off, yet the action of implement moving in and on a surface, creates a fact in time.
So, how much control do you really have, because when the education system gradually phased out this childhood expressive capacity, and channelled human information via 0 1 2 3 4 5 ......9, and abc......z, a whole personal cognitive system of learning was effectively paralysed, closed down, and even subject to ridicule.
