Victor Edwards on Iere Theatre Productions Ltd's Re-Enactment of Indian Arrival on :

That it happened at all is a testament to the resilience of the Iere Theatre Productions to produce and present theatre that is steeped in our history, heritage and culture!
In 2013, Iere Theatre Productions Limited was already involved in two production projects - Samuel Selvon’s “A Brighter Sun” for Naparima Bowl, and an excerpt from Seepersad Naipaul’s “Adventures of Gurudeva” for Friends of Mr Biswas’ to be staged at the National Library’s auditorium. So, when Minister Clifton De Coteau, then Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration called me to his office to discuss the production of the
reenactment’, also to be staged in May, I felt overwhelmed. I remember telling him that I was already doing a ‘big’ production, but without losing a beat he responded, like the theatre person he was, that I will have to make this (the reenactment) my big production. I told him I would have to think about it and left his office.
That evening at home, while pondering the idea, I was awakened by the thought…If I did not do this at this moment in time, (me being mostly of East Indian heritage) I would lose a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to honour my ancestors in this special way. And there it was!
The rest of the story was really an adventure of the entire cast travelling by pirogue to the island, or sometimes by the fast Coast Guard patrol boats, of having one day of all rehearsals with ALL facilities and equipment having to be brought to the island, of the cast being put up at a hotel for the five days we performed the play, of the travelling back and forth to the mainland to have costumes washed and pressed, of performing through a storm on high waves, and so much more. On the last day, during the storm, when schoolchildren were on board the boat and couldn’t disembark, the Minister wanted to cancel but I told him you should never make a promise to children you cannot keep. In minutes, we re- blocked the play, performing in the boat and on the pier in driving rain even though prop items were being blown into the sea.
The final act of this experience for the cast and production team was the planting of a mango tree on the island. It was the moment that the real met the surreal! An original song which was composed by Visham Bhimull and sung by the talented Sharda Maharaj in the
production, was sung at the symbolic planting and brought the entire cast together - tears flowed effortlessly and permanent bonds were created.
Let us not forget this historical moment on Nelson Island and let the following pictures tell the gaps in this recounting.
