Celebrating the Life & Legacy of The Mighty Sparrow
The Copyright Music Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) honours the life and enduring legacy of Dr. Slinger Francisco - The Mighty Sparrow. One of Calypso’s most celebrated musical voices and a true son of the Caribbean. He was born September 7, 1935, in Grenada, before moving to Trinidad and growing up in Laventille, where his extraordinary musical journey took flight. The Mighty Sparrow became a defining figure in Calypso, using his music, wit and unmistakable voice to chronicle the experiences, stories and spirit of the Caribbean.

His life and music remind us that while our islands may be separated by water, our stories, rhythms, struggles and celebrations connect us as one Caribbean people. Through Calypso, he carried those stories across borders, giving voice to a region whose spirit could never be confined to a single island.

A member of COTT since 1985, his contribution to our musical heritage is reflected in the 535 registered compositions that he has recorded during his membership with us.

His music transcended generations and borders, leaving an indelible mark on Calypso and on the cultural identity of Trinidad and Tobago. As we commemorate his life, we celebrate not only the artist, but the songwriter, storyteller and cultural icon whose work continues to live through the music he created.

From the unforgettable “Jean and Dinah” and “Congo Man”, to “Dan Is the Man (in the Van),” “Obeah Wedding,” “Mr. Walker,” and “Capitalism Gone Mad,” Sparrow's catalogue reflected the humour, social commentary, politics, history and everyday life of the Caribbean.

His voice may have fallen silent, but his music remains to carry his stories, his spirit and the sound of the Caribbean across generations.

From Calypso to Soca, Chutney to Steelpan, and every sound in between, our music has always found a way to bring us together, tell our stories and celebrate what makes us uniquely Trinidad and Tobago. Music reminds us of who we are; one people, connected by a shared rhythm, culture and spirit.
This Republic Day, may we remember that beneath our differences, we share one home, one culture and one heartbeat.
Happy Republic Day from the management and staff at COTT
