To all the jamette women
All the Obeah women
All the Iyalorisas
And the Pointers
All the ones they hang for poisoning slave masters
All the ones who ran away
All the ones who fed us
And the ones who hid us
All the ones whose knees were permanently scarred from work and prayer
All the ones they never mention in the history books
We will never forget you
Stop who?
Stop how?

How do we begin to say thank you? What a season it has been, starting from our first meetings with cast and crew last October and building up to our school and adult performances last Friday at Naparima Bowl. Now as we enter our review process, we are taking the time to reflect on how much we were able to achieve even as we faced challenges and setbacks.
Gratitude first to our amazing cast and crew who gave their all for over three months of intense physical, emotional and spiritual preparation.
We give thanks for our sponsors, allies and partners who walked with us through the Kambule Spirit of Carnival Festival Season 2026:

3 January River and Forest Training in partnership with Kalinda Kollective and Peter King Rato Noel;
24 January Kalinda Workshop in partnership with Kalinda Kollective faciltated by Keegan Taylor and Peter King Rato Noel.
28 January - Launch of Spirit of Carnival Artist in Residence sponsored by Caribbean Culture Fund
29 -30 January. School Mas Making Workshops in Partnership with Voukoum Mouvman Kiltirel Gwadloup
31 January MAS Workshop in partnership with Know Your Caribbean and Voukoum, sponsored by Caribbean Culture Fund
6 - 27 February Kambule Schools Workshops and Show sponsored by Republic Bank Power to Make a Difference Programme
7 February JAB Workshop facilitated by Emmanuel Ansolia, Andishire Bernard and Kiah Mulrain
13 February Kambule on Piccadilly Greens in partnership with National Carnival Commission of Trinidad and Tobago- NCC
27 February Kambule at Naparima Bowl

We give thanks to everyone who came to see Kambule, who took part in a workshop, liked or commented on a post, supported us through the purchase of our t-shirts.
We give thanks to our immediate and extended community - our stage crew, sound engineers, cleaners, tailors, drivers, drum makers. GIve thanks for friends and partners, husbands and wives and children who were understanding as we worked so many long hours. To everyone who kept us fed and watered through long days and nights of rehearsals, we give thanks, with a special mention to Don's Roti Shop, Chee Mooke Bakery Ltd., Jumbo Foods and Dale Ramirez of Toucan Restaurant, all the parents of performers who were so supportive especially Ms Roxy, Tishanna and Sally. Big up also to Fundisha Long and a special shout out to to Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival and the Doig family.
What's next from the Kambule crew? Stay tuned for a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT coming soon!

Take a trip to the gayelle and you will still hear this lavway. In the absence of newspaper articles that tell the story from the perspective of the jamettes and stickfighters, we remember what happened in the 1881 through the living archive of the songs of the gayelle. It is a bold declaration from the stickfighters signaling their intent to confront Captain Baker. Joe Talmana was their leader, the man who history says unseated Baker from his horse on that fateful morning. It’s one of the few surviving lavways still sung in kreyol/patwa.
Come sing it with us Friday night at Naparima Bowl!

This year as in previous years, the conversation around Carnival has been about what has been lost, what is missing, how it used to be. But this is not a time to wring our hands and act like we are powerless. If our ancestors had done that we wouldn’t have a Carnival to criticize. We’re here to ask and find answers - is there a place on the road for a mas that is self-made, a personal statement for your ancestors, for your community, for the wider society? On Saturday we shared stories from across the Caribbean about the ways that our people have used Carnival/mas/festivals to make our presence felt, to demand recognition and repair, and to create spaces of joy. We have the blueprint, we have our memories, there are always options.

Take back what is yours!
