Celebration

Date: 2026
Medium: Mixed Media on Canvas
Artwork Size: 9" H x 12"W

Description of Artwork:
This kite, titled “Celebration,” was created as a collaborative artwork between Trinidad & Tobago and China for the 2026 “Carnival in the Sky” Kite Festival. The design celebrates a remarkable cultural alignment: Carnival Tuesday in Trinidad & Tobago coincided with China’s Year of the Fire Horse, creating a symbolic moment of shared celebration.

The artwork brings together iconic cultural elements from both nations. A traditional Chinese red knot is featured to symbolize enduring friendship, unity, and the strengthening of cultural ties between the two countries.

Representing Trinidad & Tobago is the Moko Jumbie, a beloved traditional Carnival character, depicted on stilts and dressed in the national colours of red, white, and black while playing the steelpan, the national instrument. The Moko Jumbie embodies celebration, resilience, and the vibrant spirit of Carnival.

Representing China is the traditional Lion Dance, a central feature of Chinese celebrations and festivals. The lion is dressed in red, a colour that symbolizes joy, prosperity, and good fortune.

Both cultural figures are intentionally positioned at the same height to reflect mutual respect, equality, and the shared strength of cultural traditions. The Moko Jumbie rises on stilts, while the Lion Dance is performed by two dancers working together, symbolizing collaboration and collective energy.

Set against a backdrop of golden auspicious clouds and blue skies, the imagery expresses optimism, prosperity, and the promise of a bright future built on cultural exchange and friendship.

Description of Artwork: This piece features a moko jumbie in red, white, and black, honouring our national identity, strength, and resilience. I’ve always been fascinated by moko jumbies — their presence, symbolism, and the way they tower as protectors and storytellers of our culture. For me, this work celebrates who we are as Trinbagonians: proud, rooted, and rising like the phoenix — carrying history, spirit, and movement forward. ❤️🖤🤍
