I’m excited to share that I’ve been awarded a Creative Growth Fellowship in literature by the City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture []!

This fellowship will support my forthcoming art book, Writing Home: Art, Identity, and Story in Trinidad and Tobago, as it moves closer to publication. The project documents and celebrates the resilience and creativity of Trinidad and Tobago’s artists and culture keepers—painters, sculptors, priestesses, carvers, stained glass and copper workers—while exploring what it means to find “home” through art and story. As a recipient of this fellowship, I’ll continue amplifying diasporic voices of the Caribbean that redefine what belonging, home, and heritage mean. I’m thrilled to carry these stories forward and to share them with Sacramento and beyond. Grateful to continue this journey of cultural preservation and creative growth.

Calling all friends and supporters! I need your help for an incredible artist and educator who has touched countless lives in Trinidad & Tobago.
Miss Marcia Hernandez-Des Vignes, one of Tobago's pioneering art teachers, is facing a critical health challenge. This Friday, February 14, 2025, at 9 AM PT, she will undergo heart surgery to address her severe heart condition.
For over 30 years, Miss Marcia has been a cornerstone of arts education in Tobago, following in her father's footsteps to champion art in the school curriculum. Her impact extends beyond the classroom - she's also an award-winning Carnival costume designer. I had the privilege of working with her to recreate a 1963 Carnival costume worn by my mother for a recent photo shoot.

Here's how you can help this remarkable woman:
1) Send positive thoughts and healing energy during her surgery on Friday.
2) Make a donation to support her medical expenses.
Donation Details:
• Bank: RBC Royal Bank (Trinidad & Tobago) Limited, Port of Spain
• Account Holder: Marcia Des Vignes
• Account #: 100003050325594
• SWIFT CODE: RBTTTTPX
• Address: 48A Highlands Road, Moriah, Tobago, Republic of Trinidad & Tobago
Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference. Let's rally together to support Miss Marcia in her time of need and show our appreciation for her lifelong dedication to art and education in Tobago.

Some years ago got a chance to visit Martinique. Was struck by the beauty and character of the place, the architecture and of course the street art. Where’s one of your favorite places to search for art? Drop a line in comments!

Meet Hulda Guzmán.

She is a figurative painter who focuses on narrative and space in her work.

An artist living in the tropical jungle , she creates works that are connected to nature, often using wood as her painting surface and the lush vegetation of her home country as her subject matter.

Guzmán’s work seeks to blur the lines between the private and public spheres, be that in her portraiture or her depictions of lush interior spaces; erotic and orgiastic scenes in tropical landscapes; and casual hang outs with inner demons.

Her paintings are currently featured in “The Other Side of Now: Foresight in Contemporary Caribbean Art.”

Emancipation Day, like Juneteenth in the US, is a holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean.

The Slavery Abolition Act was passed on August 1, 1834, putting an end to the enslavement of Africans within British colonies.

Something that fascinates me on my trips to the twin islands is the architecture and colors of the houses. Houses in the United States and regions in Canada are frequently plain in color and have a cookie-cutter design. Houses in T and T are a joy to look at, and I often stop to admire them as I walk by. Here are some of my favorites from my trips.
