Santa Rosa Festival is far more than a celebration. For the First People, it is a sacred expression of faith, identity, heritage, culture, and resilience a tradition carried forward by generations who refused to allow their history and traditions to disappear.
Behind the beauty of the festival is a tremendous amount of sacrifice. The preparations require time, dedication, personal resources, sleepless nights, hard work, and the commitment of individuals and families who give of themselves because they understand the importance of preserving what was handed down to them. Many sacrifices are made quietly, without recognition, because the goal is not personal gain but the survival of a culture.
It is about preserving heritage. It is about keeping alive the traditions, customs, spirituality, stories, ceremonies, music, food, craftsmanship, and identity of the First Peoples. It is about ensuring that future generations will have something tangible to inherit and be proud of.
The First People community was dealt a difficult hand throughout history. Despite displacement, hardship, discrimination, loss of ancestral lands, and attempts to diminish Indigenous identity and traditions, our people persevered. The continued celebration of Santa Rosa is itself a testament to that perseverance.
Every flower placed, every ceremony performed, every song sung, every traditional practice maintained, and every person who volunteers their time represents a connection to those who came before us.
Saint Rose reminds us that we are still here.
It is a celebration of survival, faith, identity, and resilience. It is a responsibility to protect what our ancestors fought to preserve and to ensure that the generations yet unborn can understand where they came from.
The sacrifice made by the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community in preparing for this festival should therefore never be measured simply in financial terms. Its true value is measured in heritage preserved, culture protected, traditions continued, and a people who continue to stand proudly despite the hand that history dealt them.
Santa Rosa is not simply a festival. It is our heritage. It is our resilience. It is our responsibility. It is a living reminder that the First Peoples endured and continue to endure for the sake of those who will come after us.
