Red trams gliding slowly along the rails, crowds spilling into the sloping streets, and that familiar blue settling over the city. Everyone seems to be rushing somewhere, while Istanbul itself is in no hurry at all.

The remarkable image shows a giant red sprite appearing high above a thunderstorm. Although it may look like a scene from a science-fiction film, the event is entirely natural and involves no digital effects or image manipulation.

Red sprites are massive electrical discharges triggered by powerful lightning strikes. They occur approximately 50 to 90 kilometres above storm clouds. Since they last for only a few milliseconds, they are extremely difficult to see with the naked eye and even harder to photograph.
