Looking back at Robert Montgomery’s first solo exhibition in Turkey, presented by ISTANBUL’74 in 2015.

Bringing together light installations, billboard poems, woodcuts, watercolours, and documentation of his Fire Poem project at the Louvre, the exhibition traced Montgomery’s distinctive artistic language. Through text, light, and public space, his works transformed poetry into an immersive experience, inviting viewers to encounter language in unexpected ways.

Forms In Residence transforms the iconic Villa Westhinder into a dialogue between architecture, collectible design and contemporary craftsmanship. One of Belgium's most remarkable modernist residences becomes the setting for a group exhibition that brings together contemporary designers and artists in conversation with its architectural legacy.

Presented by Objects With Narratives, the exhibition explores how design can exist in dialogue with architecture, revealing new perspectives through materiality, space and storytelling. On view in Knokke, Belgium until 16 August.

Through the lens of Sanlé Sory, photography became a celebration of identity, youth, and freedom.

Working from his Volta Photo studio in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, during the 1960s and 1970s, Sanlé Sory documented a generation embracing independence, music, and self-expression. His carefully composed black-and-white portraits captured not only the fashion and spirit of the era, but also the optimism of a society in transformation.

Today, Sory’s archive is recognised as one of the most important visual records of post-independence West Africa, with his work featured in major international museums and exhibitions.

Where architecture becomes sculpture.

Overlooking the Mediterranean, Palais Bulles is less a house than an architectural manifesto. Designed by Antti Lovag, the residence rejects straight lines in favour of organic forms inspired by nature and the human body.

Acquired by Pierre Cardin in 1992, the villa evolved into a gathering place for artists, designers, and creatives, hosting exhibitions, fashion presentations, and cultural events. Today, it remains one of the French Riviera’s most iconic architectural landmarks, where art, design, and architecture continue to intersect.

Melting Beauty arrives in Antiparos this summer with an exhibition that reconsiders the evolving idea of beauty through contemporary art. Presented by L’Appartement Gallery and curated by Craig Burnett, the exhibition brings together an international group of artists exploring transformation, memory, materiality, and the relationship between nature and the human form.

Set against the distinctive landscape of the Cyclades, Melting Beauty creates a compelling dialogue between sculpture, painting, and installation. On view through 31 August, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the idea of beauty through the encounter between contemporary art and the natural landscape of Antiparos.

A friendship spanning decades is entering a new chapter.

Acclaimed Turkish-Italian filmmaker Ferzan Özpetek will direct a new television series exploring the life and legacy of Giorgio Armani. Developed with the support of the Armani fashion house, the project will trace the designer’s personal journey, creative vision, and the story behind one of the world’s most influential fashion houses.

Having shared a longstanding friendship shaped by creative collaborations over the years, Armani and Özpetek now come together once again to bring the intersection of fashion and cinema to the screen.

Forever fascinated with the moon 🌙

Today, August 12, the moon crosses the face of the Sun. For a few minutes along the path of totality, daylight gives way to shadow — a rare alignment that has drawn eyes upward for centuries.

Artists, too, have continually returned to the celestial: to the Sun and moon, to cycles and orbits, to darkness, illumination and the strange geometries of the cosmos.

On the occasion of today’s solar eclipse, six visions of looking upward.

Agnes Pelton, *Departure*, 1952, oil on canvas
Alma Thomas, *The Eclipse*, 1970, acrylic on canvas
Howard Russell Butler, *Solar Eclipse, Lompoc 1923*, 1923, oil on canvas
Hilma af Klint, *Group X, No. 1, Altarpiece*, 1915, oil and metal leaf on canvas
Georgia O’Keeffe, *Pink Moon Over Water*, 1923, oil on canvas

A Night Written in the Stars

12 August brings two extraordinary celestial moments together: a solar eclipse by day and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower after dark. As the night unfolds, the sky becomes a canvas of light, with shooting stars tracing their way across the darkness.

A rare date to look up.

Tune into our editors’ picks on what’s happening across Türkiye this month.

From Baksı Museum in Bayburt to Arter and İstanbul Modern in Istanbul, August brings together exhibitions spanning contemporary art, painting, photography, and architecture. The month also offers new perspectives through Liquid Future, The Geography of Memory, and Rahşan Düren’s Play Again, while Heinz Peter Schwerfel’s Witnessing Contemporary Art reflects on the evolving landscape of contemporary artistic practice.

Performance and music continue to shape the season. The 54th İstanbul Music Festival, 33rd İstanbul Jazz Festival, and the Imperial Russian Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet bring together classical music, jazz, and dance, while Amadeus Live in Concert and Yann Tiersen – Rathlin from a Distance offer two distinct musical experiences.
