Khun Firefly Stories

Khun Firefly Stories I capture stories of everyday life through my lens, from simple moments and different cultures to faith, people, and journeys.

Like a firefly, I hope each photograph can shine a small light on stories that might otherwise be overlooked.

During that trip to India, our guide told us that Vulture Peak was one of the most meaningful places to give alms.

There was an elderly woman named Mae Sai who had prepared a large amount of money in small notes. She gave donations all along the path, from the top of the mountain down to the foot of the hill.

What impressed me most was how calmly and orderly the beggars waited. No one broke the line, no one pushed, and no one fought over what was being given.

Each person received their share quietly, then moved aside for the next. Everything was so peaceful that giving alms there felt genuinely joyful and uplifting.

For me, Vulture Peak may be one of the most orderly and pleasant places I have ever seen for giving to those in need.

This is Vulture Peak in India.

When I reached the top, I saw a foreign monk and a group of pilgrims sitting quietly in prayer and meditation, surrounded by colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind.

What caught my attention was that they had come from different countries, spoke different languages, and probably followed different traditions. Yet when they arrived at this place, they all seemed to share one thing in common: faith in the Buddha.

Some were reading prayer texts. Some sat with their eyes closed and their hands folded. Others remained in silent meditation, as if everything around them had briefly fallen still.

As I stood there watching, I felt that Buddhism does not belong to any one nationality. It is something that can bring people from around the world together and allow them to sit in peace side by side.

The beggars at Vulture Peak were the most orderly and respectful group I encountered during my travels in India.

They did not follow visitors around, pressure anyone, shout loudly, or grab at people. Instead, they remained quietly in their own places. Those who wished to give could do so, and those who chose not to were allowed to pass without being disturbed.

It was a kind of calmness that I rarely saw among beggars in other places.

Although they were still waiting for money or small offerings from passing visitors, they did so in a peaceful and disciplined way that did not make anyone feel uncomfortable.

For me, Vulture Peak may have been one of the pilgrimage sites with the calmest and most orderly beggars I encountered.

While I was walking near Vulture Peak, I noticed a young girl making her way quickly down the mountain.

She had almost passed me before I managed to raise my camera. I nearly missed the moment, but fortunately, I was able to capture this photograph.

When I looked at it again later, I thought she looked incredibly cool. There was something striking about the way she walked, the clothes she wore, and the expression in her eyes. Everything felt completely natural, without her having to pose at all.

Sometimes, the photographs we almost miss turn out to be the ones with the strongest character and the most charm.

And that is the story behind this photograph.

At Tapotharam, the lowest point of the area is a bathing pond used by people regarded as “outcastes,” or those placed at the very bottom of society and often looked down upon by others.

When I first saw it, the pond almost looked like a place where wastewater had collected. Everything happened in the same space: people bathed, washed their clothes, and carried out their daily routines side by side.

At first, the scene felt uncomfortable to look at. But the longer I watched, the more emotions I began to see within it.

There were children playing happily in the water, people sitting and relaxing, and others quietly going about their own work. Every kind of life seemed to come together around this one pond.

To me, the pond was not only a picture of poverty or poor conditions. It also held laughter, exhaustion, and the everyday lives of people continuing on in a place that society may rarely choose to see.

This is Veluvana.

As I walked in, I saw people offering flowers to the Buddha image. Some stood with their hands together in prayer, some carefully applied gold leaf, while others quietly arranged their offerings with great attention.

What I saw was more than a religious ritual. It was the faith of each person, expressed in a different way. Some remained silent, some gazed at the Buddha image, and others seemed to be making a private wish in their hearts.

I stood watching from a distance and felt that, no matter how much time passes, this place still draws people who come to remember the Buddha.

So this series of photographs is not only about a Buddha image or flowers. It is about the faith that each person carried from home and placed before the Buddha at Veluvana.

When I visited Nalanda and walked further into the site, I noticed an elderly man standing quietly against an old brick wall.

The moment I saw him, I knew the composition was right. The light, the weathered wall, and his entire presence seemed to fit together perfectly.

His checkered turban, light blue shirt, white moustache, and relaxed posture gave him a naturally striking appearance. He looked effortlessly cool, without needing to pose at all.

I quickly raised my camera, and at that exact moment, he turned and looked directly at me. He did not move away, refuse, or show any sign of discomfort. He simply stood there and met the camera with a calm, steady gaze.

There was something serious and full of character in his expression. Against the ancient brick walls of Nalanda, it almost felt as though the man and the place belonged together.

And that is the story behind this photograph.

In Rajgir, I saw horse-drawn carriages still being used to carry passengers through the streets.

Our guide explained that these horses were made to work very hard, pulling carriages and transporting people throughout the day. When I first heard that, I felt sorry for them.

But when I watched one of the carriage drivers more closely, I saw something different.

He took very good care of his horse. He stroked it, spoke to it, and constantly watched for any signs that something might be wrong. The way he treated the horse did not make it seem like merely an animal used for work. It felt more like a member of his family, almost like his own child.

That moment reminded me that sometimes, what we are told and what we see with our own eyes may not be exactly the same.

The horse may have worked hard, but at the same time, it also seemed to receive a great deal of love and care from its owner.

This is a group of beggars at Tapotharam.

As I was walking past, I noticed this elderly woman sitting among many others. In front of them were bowls and plates waiting to receive money or food from the people passing by.

But what caught my attention most was not the containers in front of her. It was her face and the look in her eyes.

I do not know what kind of life she had lived, or how long she had been sitting there. But when she looked toward my camera, she smiled at me.

That smile made me feel many things at once. I felt sympathy, curiosity, and somehow I could not help smiling back.

Even though she may not have had much in life, in that brief moment, she still had a smile to give to a stranger standing there with a camera.

And that is the story behind this photograph.

At Tapotharam in Rajgir, I saw many people bathing according to their religious beliefs.

I was told that the bathing areas were divided by caste, and that the section shown in these photographs was used by Brahmins, although I cannot personally confirm every detail.

What caught my attention was how naturally and skillfully everyone bathed and changed their clothes. The women, in particular, were able to use their saris to cover themselves while changing, as though it were a skill they had learned from childhood.

To me, these photographs are not simply about bathing. They also reflect the beliefs, traditions, and ways of life deeply woven into everyday Indian society.
