Thailand isn’t exactly known as a surf destination, but that hasn’t stopped people from paddling out when the conditions line up. Along Phuket’s west coast and a handful of beaches along the Andaman Sea, surfers wait for the monsoon winds to push just enough swell toward the shore to make carrying a board down to the sand worthwhile.
During the southwest monsoon from May through October, wind and weather systems across the Indian Ocean begin sending waves toward Thailand’s Andaman coastline. Beaches such as Kata, Kalim, Kamala, Karon, and Nai Harn start to see the kind of rolling swell that turns otherwise calm tropical waters into small but rideable beach breaks.
On most days the waves are modest. Typical surf heights around Phuket sit between 0.3 and 1 meter (roughly 1–3 feet), and outside the monsoon season the ocean can flatten out almost completely. When the wind and tide align, monsoon systems can push waves into the 1–3 meter range, sometimes larger during storms moving across the Andaman Sea. It’s rarely the kind of surf that makes global headlines, but it’s enough to keep a small community of surfers returning to the water whenever conditions cooperate.
Part of the reason Thailand remains an unlikely surf destination comes down to geography. Much of the country’s coastline faces the Gulf of Thailand, which is largely sheltered from open-ocean swell. Even along the Andaman coast, offshore islands, curved bays, and reef formations block much of the incoming energy before it reaches the beach. As a result, surf conditions depend heavily on seasonal winds rather than powerful groundswells like those found in places such as Indonesia or Hawaii.
But maybe that’s part of the appeal.
Surfing in Thailand isn’t about chasing perfect waves. It’s about the atmosphere around it—the warm water, quiet beaches, and the simple habit of bringing a board down to the shore when the ocean starts to move.
Sometimes the waves show up. Sometimes they don’t. Either way, the boards keep appearing on the sand.
The distance between Pattaya and Phuket might be far, but the same ocean connects the culture that grows around it.
