The tree's tear
ช่วงๆนี้ของปีทีไร
มักเห็นเจ้ายางไม้ใสส่องประกายระยิบๆวิบๆไหลออกมาจากต้นอยู่เรื่อย
สะเดา มะรุม มะขวิด มะกรูด
คือเจ้าต้นที่เราเคยสำรวจแถวบ้านเจอว่าเก็บเจ้ายางมาเป็นกาวประสานของสีน้ำได้
เจอแล้วต้องรีบเก็บไว้ เดี๋ยวฝนมาอีกทีหละ น้องยางจะละลายหายไปกับน้ำฝน
แท้จริงแล้วเหมือนต้นไม้ร้องไห้
ถ้าเห็นเจ้ายางๆนี้แปลว่าเจ้าต้นไม้ป่วย มีแผล ยางไหลมาเพื่อช่วยปฐมพยาบาลแผลให้ตัวเอง
เหมือนผิวหนังคนเราที่มีสะเก็ดแผล
ลองไปให้ข้อมูลพบว่าในยางไม้(resin) มีสารซูโครส กลูโคส ฟรุกโตส และคาร์โบไฮเดรต
เมื่อปลายปีที่แล้วเจอครูคนนึงเป็นคนซูดานอพยพมาเป็นครูอยู่ที่ดูไบ(ซูดานแหล่งส่งออก Arabic gum ของโลก) ครูบอกว่า resin นี้ มาจากต้นAcacia Senegal ชาวบ้านดึงมาจากต้นแล้วเคี้ยวกินเป็นcandyเลย มีผลิตภัณฑ์ทำเป็นชาด้วยพอละละลายน้ำร้อนก็จะเหนียวๆเสียดายไม่ได้ลองซื้อมาชิมดู เห็นว่าคนตั้งครรภ์กินดีด้วยแฮะ
เราลองชิมๆตัวยางไม้ที่แห้งแล้วดูรสมันจืดๆนะ
ที่ดูไบเป็นทะเลทรายหมดเลยมีต้น Acacia Senegal อยู่ตามโอเอซิส มียางไหลมาแถบทุกต้นและไม่โดนฝนชะล้างไปเพราะฝนไม่ค่อยจะตกแบบบ้านเราเมืองชื้น ฝักขะยึกขยักน่ารักยังกับหนอนในการ์ตูน ดอกสีเหลืองๆคล้ายดอกไมยราพ
This time of year,
I often see clear, glistening resin slowly dripping from tree trunks—
a quiet shimmer in the sunlight.
Neem, moringa, monkey apple, kaffir lime—
all familiar trees near home.
We once explored them and found their resin can be collected and used as a natural binder for watercolor paints.
Whenever I come across it, I try to collect it quickly—
before the rain comes and washes it all away.
In truth, tree resin is like the tree’s tears.
When you see it flowing, it means the tree is wounded.
The resin emerges to dress and protect the injury,
just as a scab forms over a wound on human skin.
I looked into it and found that tree resin contains sucrose, glucose, fructose, and other carbohydrates.
Late last year, I met a teacher—originally from Sudan, now teaching in Dubai.
(Sudan is one of the world’s leading exporters of Arabic gum.)
She told me that the resin from Acacia senegal is harvested by locals and chewed like candy.
They also brew it into a tea
I heard it’s even considered good for pregnant women.
