Where did the soil that covers many of the Moai statues on Easter Island come from, in such large quantities that it could bury the statues to significant depths?

It's thought that the soil that covers a lot of the Moai statues on Easter Island came from a mix of natural erosion and human activity. The island's soil isn't the best for growing crops, and the Rapa Nui people probably made it worse by over-farming. This led to erosion and the loss of plants. Eventually, the soil that was left got blown around by the wind and ended up covering the statues. Some people think the statues were buried on purpose, maybe as part of a ritual or to protect them during a tough time.
