We had a pleasure working with The Rapports last year to produce a video for their brand new single "Wanna Be".
During the initial talk, Tom Malyon mentioned that he wanted to create a piece where a contrast between the mundane reality and the glamour of daydreaming meet. We suggested that perhaps we could adopt two aspect ratios to reflect this; a squarer boxier 4:3 for the reality and the widescreen film format for the daydream.
To further distinguish these two worlds, we also deploy distinctive camera movements and framing for each world; For the reality scenes, we always put the camera on a stick and keep it static while finding elements in our environment to create a "frame within a frame" composition. We believe that this, combined with the 4:3 ratio, creates restrictions on our characters on screen; alas, one is stuck in the mundane reality. For the daydream scenes, we opted for handheld movement, which is much freer while combining with a 2.4:1 ratio to reflect the freedom one has in one's own dream.
All in all, it was a fun night and super happy with the result. Go on ahead and click play; a bit of warning, this song is super cool and catchy and will stay in your head all day long.
