Day Two, Three and Four
The workshop continued with students from various fields of study, working together to create illustrated images for a new mural project at Yusuf Ishak House.

The mural is based on four main themes: leadership, sport, arts, and community. Through the workshop process, students shared ideas, experiences, and perspectives as members of the campus community.

The final sharing session became a moment of reflection on how their experiences as NUS students could be translated into artworks that carry memories and the collective spirit of the university.

Day 1
A woodcut workshop with migrant workers in Singapore, organized by the NUS Museum. Participants from Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Bangladesh gathered, bringing stories of work, migration and everyday life.

Some of them are also writers from Migrant Writers of Singapore. In this shared space, words meet prints. Life stories are translated into images.

Art becomes a space to listen, to understand one another, and to build friendships beyond borders.

Special thanks to , NUS Public Art Committee, and for making this gathering possible.

—————————————/———————————-

Hari Pertama

About the Artist
Seiko’s practice grows from her experience of growing up in a homogenously planned new town in Japan, and reflects on industrial modernisation—especially the steel industry—through research-based video and material-led works.

During her time in Sabah, she has been moving slowly through places and histories, visiting sites like Sandakan and Kundasang War Memorial, while engaging with local festivals, food, landscapes, and hospitality.

At Pangrok Sulap, she is collaborating with us through video and woodcut printmaking, exploring the relationship between the human body and labour.

This residency is part of Minatomachi AIR Exchange 2025.

Welcome, Seiko Yamamoto!

We’re really happy to have Seiko Yamamoto with us as Pangrok Sulap’s latest residency artist

Seiko’s practice grows from her lived experience of a homogenously planned new town in Japan, and unfolds through research-based video and material-led works that reflect on industrial modernization—especially the steel industry.

During her time in Sabah, she has been moving slowly through places, histories, and landscapes—visiting sites such as Sandakan and Kundasang War Memorial, while experiencing the local festivals, nature, foods and hospitality.

At Pangrok Sulap, she is working closely with us on a collaborative body of work using video and woodcut printmaking, exploring the relationship between the human body and labour, and how work is felt, heard, and performed.

This residency is part of Minatomachi AIR Exchange 2025.

She will be exhibiting the works produced during this residency at the end of her stay.

More info soon.

We’re happy to welcome Anna, a final-year Anthropology student from the National University of Singapore, who is joining Pangrok Sulap as a Research and Engagement Resident as part of her Honours Thesis field research.

Identifying as both an anthropologist and artist, Anna’s practice is grounded in the co-production of narratives, with a strong emphasis on relational, visual, and written forms. Her work and research interests are rooted in community-based engagement, focusing on youth aspirations, education, indigeneity, and advocacy across Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Through her residency with Pangrok Sulap, Anna sees this exchange as a meaningful extension of her ongoing commitment to reimagining borders and co-creating more just futures, beginning from mutual care, community, and solidarity. During her time with us, she will be learning from Pangrok Sulap’s collective practice while exploring possibilities for research, dialogue, and collaboration.

We look forward to the conversations and collaborations that will emerge during her residency.

Thank you, Khon Kaen! What a trip.

This experience meant so much to us. Sure, it was a little chilly—but that never stopped us from creating. And oh, the food—each meal was a memory in itself. Incredible.

We learned a ton from KultX —about teamwork, real friendship, and how to make people feel welcome. These aren’t just lessons; they’re gifts.

This whole trip was a beautiful reminder: art isn’t just about what ends up on a wall. It’s about sharing, connection, and feeling like one big family.

So, thanks to Khon Kaen, to everyone in KultX and .tanyapalit who help us a lot, to every artist we met also, to all those delicious plates of food, and to everyone who stopped by. We’ll carry this with us. This isn’t goodbye—it’s “see you later.”

We are excited to welcome Japanese artist Mio Amakusa to Sabah for a research and art-making visit with us.

Her practice weaves together memory, embodiment, personal narratives, and allegory, spanning painting, installation, ceramics, and video. Working in the space between certainty and uncertainty in personal memory, Mio gathers what has slipped through the cracks—fragments often left out of dominant narratives.

In recent years, she has focused on video works developed through research and interviews, centring on memories absent from official histories. In her painting practice, guided by the idea that “painting is a woman, and it is myself,” she explores ways of entering the interior—the “organs”—of a painting by passing through its surface, or “skin.”

This two-week residency is supported by the Ogasawara Toshiaki Memorial Foundation. During her stay, Mio will research the history of women known as karayuki—Japanese women involved in prostitution across Southeast Asia from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

Join us for an Open Tikar Session with Mio on 20 December, 6.00 PM, at Ruang Tamu Ekosistem, where she will share her research and artistic practice.

Free admission. All are welcome.
