Field Notes 5: 27 Sept - 10 Oct. 40 days of Fak Kha Non: The Other Side

The deeper the alley, the more we learned about this district and about our nation’s history.

The remains of the arch is a reminder of the settlement of the Nana family’s trading root. In the neighborhood, we encounter an old salt warehouse, Chinese architectural facade of once a grand house, a ruin brick wall (we were told it was an encampment for ill-fated captives), and a Pae Bunnag’s noble home - all within walking distance.

Did you know Khlong San is home to long-established Muslim communities?

As early as the mid 19th century, diverse Muslims communities began settling in Khlong San district. Dawoodi Bohras migrated from Surat, India, during the reign of King Rama IV forming the district’s Shia muslim community. Known for trading textiles and gems, they transformed Khlong San into a trading hub connecting India and Siam. The over-a-century-old Saifee Mosque (white mosque) remains the central anchor of their close-knit community.

On the other hand, Khlong San’s Sunni muslim communities arrived during the reigns of King Rama III and IV, soon after establishing the Guowatil Islam Mosque (red mosque) in the former red-brick warehouse used by the Royal Treasury under Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Pichaiyatri (Tat Bunnag), who donated 1 rai of land to the community for the mosque’s construction.

Field Note 4: 20-26 September. Day 26 of 100!

As part of our fieldwork, we received such privilege from a family with deep root in Khlong San. We were told about the Chinese ancestors who set up the fish sauce factory, with know-how from a village from China, to process the less-then-desirable-fish-stock that was delivered at the nearby pier. The factory cm accommodation used to host newly arrived relatives and friends before they settled their way in Siam.

Did you know that you can visit the past at Princess Mother Memorial Park?

If you’ve explored the grounds, you may have spotted the time-worn remains of the Thim Boriwan building. The structure dates all the way back to the reign of King Rama III and was part of the grounds of the residence of Chao Phraya Si Phiphat Rattanaratchakosa (Pae Bunnag), who was Director-General of the Royal Treasury Department during the reign of King Rama 5.

Opening a dialogue between the city’s past, present, and future.

At a panel discussion titled “From This Side to The Other Side: Culture-led Urban Development is Possible”, hosted at the press conference for “Fak Kha Non: The Other Side” earlier this week, three distinguished speakers- Dr. Kamol Tassananchalee, Assoc. Prof. Apiradee Kasemsook, Ph.D., and Dr. Sarutabhandu Chakrabhandu Na Ayutaya- joined moderator Sukontip Nakasem in illuminating Khlong San’s rich, yet overlooked, cultural inheritance.

Weaving personal, professional and intellectual insights, the discussion animated the stakes of this project: from Dr. Tassananchalee‘s reservoir of memory, centering Khlong San as a stronghold of the city’s artistic life over generations, to Dr. Chakrabhandu Na Ayutaya‘s survey of the Somdet Chao Phraya Hospital’s history and public attitudes towards mental health, culminating in a vision for the hospital grounds as a refuge for local community that joined the ranks of Professor Kasemsook‘s strategies for preserving cultural heritage amidst burgeoning economic interests and future challenges.

“Fak Kha Non: The Other Side“ stands on the importance of knowing our heritage as we help each other to envision a form of urban development that uplifts the entire community. Beginning with Khlong San district, we invite you to join us in exploring the historical and cultural legacy that shapes a place, and are grateful to our speakers for providing a fascinating prologue to the program of exhibitions and events, fanning across 7 local venues, opening this December.

Field Note 3: 13-19 September. Day 19 of 100!

Accompanying our artist to explore Thailand’s dedicated “leather street” on Charoen Rat Road. This narrow historical street used to be a railway but 40 years ago gave way to the demanding traffic. Now it is home to generations of artisanal knowledge in leather craftsmanship. We also peeked in to see the current renovation stage of our Nomad Art Residency Bangkok which is located at the end of this trading area.
