Some years ago I was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of my favourite places in the world, for a photography workshop. One late afternoon a scary thunderstorm blew in right at sunset. It was a magical scene that combined a beautiful sunset to the West and the electrical storm to the North and somewhere in the mix a strong rainbow.
All of us students dashed outside with cameras to catch a slice of the show, paying little mind to the close-by lightning. As I surveyed the show, I felt a tap on my back and turned to see my instructor. "Robert, don't forget to look behind you." I turned to see that the mountains directly behind were turning a bright orange from the reflected sunset. Above it, were a smattering of pink and orange puffy clouds all surrounded by the deep, dusk-blue sky.
I recall that lesson frequently. On a recent sunset trip to a beach near St. Augustine, Florida, it was at play. I was on Florida's east coast, which means the sun sets inland. So, on this occasion, when the colors were right, I made sure I was looking at the ocean. My reward was this image of pastel blue and pink. What a sight!
Sometimes, it's not about where the light is coming from but where it is going.
