Thank you ARTnews JAPAN and Asuka Kawanabe for featuring BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY’s first presentation at Tokyo Gendai.

Writing about Still, Moving, Kawanabe reflects on how time moves through the works of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Chantana Tiprachart, Harit Srikhao, Miti Ruangkritya, and Tanatchai Bandasak—from photographs made during research in Sri Lanka and fleeting traces of smoke at Bun Bang Fai, to landscapes observed across time, twilight scenes, and physical marks accumulated on an image.

She describes the presentation as “a poetic space in which still images are inscribed with the unmistakable movement of time.”

Apichatpong Weerasethakul presents his new works using photographs taken during his travels in Sri Lanka while researching his forthcoming feature film, Jenjira’s Magnificent Dream.

Pairing photographs of historical sites and objects with ink drawings, the works move between observation and imagination, reflecting Apichatpong’s ongoing fascination with projection, light, memory, and dreamscapes. Existing somewhere between research and a film yet to come, the images hold different moments together—what was encountered, what is remembered, and what is still being imagined.

For Still, Moving, Chantana Tiprachart and Tanatchai Bandasak consider how photographs carry moments and traces through processes of transformation.

Drawn from Smoke Prayers, Chantana Tiprachart’s photograph captures a fleeting moment of smoke, light, and combustion during Bun Bang Fai, the traditional rocket festival rooted in Isan beliefs and communal practices. Suspended within the image, the event shifts from ritual and release into atmosphere and trace.

In Tanatchai Bandasak’s Dem, an existing image of a volcanic eruption displayed at the Merapi Museum is photographed again. Scratches left over time by visiting schoolchildren become part of the new photograph, carrying accumulated traces from one image into another.

ภาพถ่ายจากชุด Smoke Prayers ของฉันทนา ทิพย์ประชาติ บันทึกชั่วขณะของควัน แสง และเปลวไฟในประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ซึ่งมีรากฐานอยู่ในความเชื่อและวิถีปฏิบัติร่วมกันของชุมชนอีสาน เมื่อช่วงเวลานั้นถูกหยุดไว้ในภาพ สิ่งที่เริ่มต้นจากพิธีกรรมและการปล่อยบั้งไฟค่อยๆ แปรเปลี่ยนเป็นบรรยากาศและร่องรอยของเหตุการณ์

ผลงาน Dem ของธนัฐชัย บรรดาศักดิ์ ภาพการปะทุของภูเขาไฟที่จัดแสดงอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์เมอราปีถูกถ่ายภาพขึ้นอีกครั้ง รอยขีดข่วนที่สะสมอยู่บนพื้นผิวจากเด็กนักเรียนที่มาเยี่ยมชมจึงกลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของภาพถ่ายใหม่ ส่งต่อร่องรอยที่สะสมผ่านกาลเวลาจากภาพหนึ่งไปสู่อีกภาพหนึ่ง

Marking BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY’s first presentation at Tokyo Gendai, the presentation brings works by Miti Ruangkritya and Harit Srikhao to the fair for the first time.

Across different photographic approaches, Miti Ruangkritya and Harit Srikhao consider how an image carries time through what changes, what remains, and what slips from view.

Miti Ruangkritya’s BLISS 01_Landscape 01 comes from a series in which the artist photographs the man-made landscape from the same location at different dates and times, registering subtle shifts within an apparently stable view.

In Harit Srikhao’s Looking for Fairies, a familiar landscape at dusk hovers between the ordinary and the uncanny, presence and absence, suggesting how the visible might open onto something unseen.

Still, Moving brings together five contemporary artists whose photographic practices explore what changes, disappears, and remains.

Moving through shifting light, rituals, historical sites, dreams, memories, and material transformations, the works consider photography not as a means of fixing time, but as a space where different times and places can meet—and where time continues through the image.

pympit is an experimental artist working across sound, visual, and performance through live coding, noise, and raw materials. Moving between noise, ritual, and altered states of perception, she uses sound, code, and improvisation to construct layered, dreamlike, and semi-digital environments. For MUSIC PROJECT, she developed her ELM contribution deadstock memory_ into the live performance Something Luminous.

Tinnawat Chankloi is a communication designer who makes music to listen, respond, and be heard. For Voice Memos, he brings together short piano pieces and melodic fragments recorded on his iPhone between 2023–2026, continuing the same process that led to February Reprised, his contribution to Experimental Library Music (ELM). He previously collaborated with BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY on Harit Srikhao’s Imago and returned through MUSIC PROJECT to present his own work.
