The hours between midnight and sunrise occupy a significant place within club culture and techno communities. Marked by heightened attention, collective presence, and shifting states of perception, this period has long functioned as a site for encounter, movement, and shared experience.

Conceived in response to the spatial conditions of BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY and its listening structure, "00:00–06:00" (Midnight to Sunrise) considers how the atmosphere, sonic intensity, and communal dynamics of these nocturnal hours might be translated into another context. Rather than recreating the club, the project repositions its temporal and social qualities within a space dedicated to listening, gathering, and reflection.

ELM (Experimental Library Music) is an open call for sound-based works presented as part of MUSIC PROJECT from 23 May to 22 August 2026. Selections from the ELM Collection will be activated every Thursday throughout the project period, while the research space holding the full collection and archive remains open Thursday–Saturday, 13:00–18:00.

MUSIC PROJECT is a new platform for gallery programming and a long-duration project dedicated to listening, sound, and music as forms of cultural memory, public gathering, and interdisciplinary experimentation.

The playlist is imagined as a constellation of various affordances of semangat (what the nusantara and wider world refers to as the invisible and spiritual life force).

If time is not a straight line; then it is a series of interlocking frequencies that create harmony or dissonance depending on how you layer them.

If capital traverses time by compounding interest, semangat traverses time through convocation.

Let semangat flow through you.

Rafi Abdullah is a writer and curator from Singapore, and a key member of the art collective TO NEW ENTITIES.

MUSIC PROJECT invites submissions of sound-based works that engage with these thoughts and conditions. There is no selection process; all submissions will be presented within a collective archive in a shared space that invites durational listening. Small research desks will be present for visitors to explore and listen through headphones.

EXPERIMENTAL LIBRARY MUSIC aims to collect, document, share and make sense of our shared conditions and the potential of music and sound as modes of response, critique, expressions and experimentations.

White Fungus Issue 11: The Sound of the Underground, experimental and Non-academic Musics in China (p.100-104).

While culture has been eradicated and wiped from the surface, the underground is cooking. "The Sound of the Underground: Experimental and Non-Academic Musics in China," written by Zbigniew Karkowski and Yan Jun and first published in the booklet for the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival in Hong Kong in 2007, surveys how experimental music in China emerged after the Cultural Revolution.

“With the market economy introduced in the 80s and the media development in the 90s there was finally an explosion in youth culture and music that had been held back for decades. At the same time, the experimental art and music scenes were expanding at a similar pace but without building on those movement: psychedelic music, punk, Neo-dada and other avant-garde movements that never reached China.”

The experimental sounds that emerged from underground rock culture in the 1990s were, in large part, the result of surplus and unsalable CDs and cassettes arriving from the West. “Many international record companies and CD stores in the West occasionally dump excess inventory of unsalable or surplus CDs, by selling them to developing countries as recyclable plastic. Many of them are clipped with an electric saw — thus the name dakou to “make a gap” — but many are not. In the early 90s these ended up for sale on the streets, and the selection consisted of almost from recent (surplus) rock and pop to 70s “has been”, classical music, free jazz, etc. Since the Chinese government controls imports of audio and video products every strictly, the phenomenon of “dakou” became the main source of Western music for rockers and other “New Youth” in the 90s, Thus Chinese underground rock and punk movements in the 90s were in large part built on influences of what was surplus in the West”
